they will still want a minutes-eating vet on a team - bmeltzer
Sigh. Yes that is what the Flyers need, a d-man making outrageous money to be a vet that eats minutes.
He stinks for the money he is paid and i do not want his style of play as something that the kids look to to learn from.
Just keep backing in... Keep it coming... yep, let the forwards gain the zone with no pressure...

In my opinion the narrative of MacDonald backing in is ridiculously overblown. MacDonald plays a solid fundamental game. |

Im afraid that they're going to lose Raffl. - MJL
If they don't sign Weal, I think they protect Rafl. He is the next most valuable of the remaining group. Would love to see him. Veccs and Pebs 4th line. |

Bill made some reasonable points on why the Flyers might protect MacDonald. - MJL
For sure he did....but others made some very good points to argue the other side. That Macdonald despite being a average veteran d man is on a very poor contract and can be replaced.....like others suggested, despite what Flyers told Delzotto, I would rather have him on a decent contract then Macdonald any day of the week. |

I personally would not protect MacDonald. I think his contract protects him. If he's selected then there are factors that help the Flyers there in terms of future cap space. The Flyers will be able to withstand the loss. Also if they protect Manning then I see them being able to keep both. Manning probably would not be taken but you never know.
Del Zotto did not play well last year and MacDonald has been a better player lately. I'd look at other options first before bringing back Del Zotto. |

we don't need raffle he's easily replaceable and we need room for our log jam of young forwards now |

I see Laughton getting taken before raffl. Raffl is a better player than read Leir cousins. He can play across the line up and is willing to play any role you need. I think his injury made people forget he is a really quality depth player. He's not as easily replaceable as you believe as we don't readily have someone who can play pp pk wing center play in front the net or on the boards. He's not a crucial building block but were better with than without. |

Durability is starting to become a concern for Raffl. He's played a full season once in 4 years. I would hope Laughton is traded if he isn't in the long term plans. Better to at least get a draft pick now then spend another year in the AHL. Rinaldo and McGinn went for 3rd rounders as a reference.

Exactly. Just because a rationale exists doesn't mean its the correct one. It's a no brainer to not protect Amac. Should be an easy decision for management. |

I think people are really overstating Laughtons value around the league
I mean if this guy were a 2nd round pick (like he was supposed to be) does he even enter into the vegas talk? |

My point exactly. He can play so many places up and down the line up. Quite frankly, I have been waiting for the time he is on the 4th line. Means we should have three real nice lines ahead and he makes the 4th line way better. Oooorrr, perhaps we should just resign VDV for 3 years and lock down that 4 LW spot. |

Don't need him, and if one of the kids outplays him, great. At this point, none of the remaining kids has done so. I like his game, plays hard, has some pop, drives play and will play ANYWHERE, without whining.
There are too many variables to figure out at the moment. The fact that we are talking about not NEEDING Rafl for the fourth line is incredible. He played 1st line last year. How much better a situation are we in now?
We don't know who is coming @ #2 OR if he sticks. I think Patrick maybe but Nico maybe back to JRs to bulk up a bit.
No over pay for Weal, no #2. So who is our 12?
Lindblom, G, Jake
TK, Val, Simmer
Schenn, Coots, Weise
Pebs, Veccs, Rafl
Cousins/Laughton/Read/Leir
One of the last 7 goes to LV and 2 in the press box. One to Phantoms
Still a better team than last year. Read and Val are both gone next year and Rafl and Pebs the following year. The kids can shove them out sooner if they earn it. |
