Problem is...you need to beat the west to win the cup.
You build a team to win the cup...not the east.

But I look at teams who I consider to have a good defensive team in the East and they just can't get out of the East.

Rangers, Washington, Montreal have the best defensive game imo. None of them are in any danger of winning a cup anytime soon

Try to be a contender right away to get playoff buzz, or go young and try to build a group through the draft. Especially with Some of the high end guys in 2018 looking so good like Svechnikov, Dahlen and Merkley

I've been told Colin White is basically Bergeron and Chabot is basically Doughty (Per Pierre), so they are pretty set to lose any player they want!

Either way the leafs do need to improve their D. Maybe not blow cupboards open to get a 1-2 dman...but they need to have better quality 3-6 dmen.
But ya I agree, get the puck out to the forwards and simply protect youre own end.
