Agreed. But you may be a several step process.
Trade jvr for picks/prospects
Trade picks/prospects for a dman.
Sign a UFA forward to replace jvr.
Seems like you can find decent wingers on the ufa market much more easily than dmen. - Tumbleweed
Sure. However you want to do it. I don’t think it’s wise to just ignore free agency altogether though. Don’t go nuts, but there some good signings. It’s not like every single one is a failure.

I have a feeling they won't be opposed to trading their 1st in this draft either if it means bringing back the right defenseman. |

TJ Oshie?
Plus we have, without JVR,
Kapanen
Sosh
Komarov
Hyman
Rychel
and a few others marinating.
I wouldn't mind seeing
Oshie, Matthews, Nylander
Kapanen, Bozak, Marner
Komarov, Kadri, Brown
Rychel, Boyle, Hyman
Rielly, Manson
Gardiner, Zaitsev
Nelson, Stone
Polak
Trade JVR for pics/prospects or for Manson.
Pick up Oshie and Stone as UFAs.
Add one D rookie in Nelson. |

I think the Leafs should trade away some players that they think they could probably go without going forward, in exchange for a player or players that they think will improve the team. |

Montreal is in that position imo. They need to ante up and put their chips on the table and go for it with Price/Weber right now. If I were Bergevin, I'd be going after Duchesne this summer and trading picks, prospects and youth to finally get some punch into that lineup. - fifty__missions
The Subban for Weber trade made everyone (myself included) that the Habs were "going for it" this year and the next few years.
But by refusing to trade away draft picks to acquire a true number one centre (Duchene, as you stated, should have been a prime target) he decided to stay put, refusing to trade away the future.
Plus, if you hear the way he talked after the season, Bergevin seems to think the Habs have a chance to win the cup as long as Price is in net.... even when alot more money is involved in him and Pacioretty.
So I'm not sure what to think anymore.... I think this summer will tell us alot of where this team is going. If it remains the same, without addressing it's offensive issues.... I'm gonna lose faith in Bergevin having an actual plan for the Habs. |

The current status of the NHL and the Olympics might push back some of those KHL guys another year. I'd love them to take another flyer on a Russian d-man though.
Stone isn't that good, but he's an upgrade over Marincin and Marchenko |

So I'm guessing they didn't want to lose Martin to Vegas hence the Smith signing.

I am not sure the Habs had or have anything that Colorado wants for Duchene. Other teams would come up with better offers.

Aw poop, thought Stone was a good RD. Alzner or Kulikov maybe?
I guess the point is....we have a lot of options.
Every time I try to think of a line up, I realize I forget good players who could kill it for us. Forgot Sosh and Leivo in that last line up.
Between JVR, Sosh, Leivo, Kapanen, Brown, Hyman, Rychel, Andreas Johnsson, Leipsic, Engvel, Timashov........there should be something there to get a D without feeling any loss. That's not even including a draft pick here or there.
Nice feeling for a change. |

I'm not sure if another young-ish, inconsistent centre who has difficulties in his own end is what the Avs would want? |
