I'm talking about moving forward as players need to be resigned. You, like most Leafs fans, are thinking very short term.

Over 50 million in cap space when their rookies are due for new contracts ....what are they going to do ?

People just can't believe it can happen even though we see teams jump too early more times than not.

Oilers traded Hall for a top 2 D... and Darnell Nurse was a top 10 pick. Good luck with that. A couple of more seasons of being patient would have made that task a lot easier. There wont be cap space for a top UFA D either... Oilers were patient... Leafs, in my opinion, too early. You will be good... very exciting regular season team. Been there done that.... I'm on board with a long term plan... no short cuts to rush into the playoffs...

- boonerbuck

Why wont there be cap space? Didnt everyone chirp the oilers about being awful and never doing anything to improve for the longest time? There best dman is Klefbom and they drafted him 19th overall.. Signed sekera and russel.. This fan base poop on the leafs and oilers the most for tanking now the leafs make moves to be better and you dont like that either. Either way, it will be interesting to see what they do to improve this off season, they showed with the Anderson trade they will make trades so who knows. Vancouver's got some nice young pieces so if they keep going down the path they are they will be alright, next year could be exciting if lots of the young guys make it

I'm not a leafs fan, but I think these are the types of problems you want to have.
- hillbillydeluxe

No doubt. Obviously the Leafs haven't had this problem before, but i'm interested to see why people don't think they can easily be signed with all the cap room the Leafs have, in addition to Lupul, Bozak and others coming off before any of the 3 need a raise.
It's as if he's saying, you can't have 3 good players on one team or you're (frank)ed cap wise.

This is what I'm not getting.

The Leafs are actually one of the best positioned with regards to the cap.

Can they screw it up? Absolutely they can.

But at this moment, they could fit the 3 in and then a hell of a lot more.

For F$*K sakes, I can't believe we got 4th overall and Las Vegas gets 1st

I won't be around later so I thought I would get my frustrations out early! I am kidding, we will be picking first!

So basically, you're saying you don't believe all 3 of Nylander, Marner and Matthews can be fit under the cap?
- walshyleafsfan

...and add a top D UFA or two, and ice a full championship team... no. Absolutely not. Not after trading for/re-signing a vet like Andersen for 5 years instead of sticking with the draft.

Best to sign a G short term and keep that 1st rounder and take the higher pick this summer again... but it's Toronto... rush rush rush.... just like the past... Andersen was good... too good for this early. He's Jeckle and Hyde in the playoffs. He'll give away as many games as he'll steal... who knows which you are going to get.

Considered putting $ on the Sens when they were down 5-3 for that very reason... It was 20/1. I didn't

Nowhere was I saying they can't afford their three big rookies. You guys inserted that yourselves. All a long I have been talking about what they will have to add to the team to win a cup. You guys are going way side ways on me.

I disagree

Having a good goalie helps the kids more than not ...they are allowed to make mistakes and not lose game after game ...that is what hurt the oilers ...they couldn't get a save and they started losing and then the confidence disappeared

I just don't think they are in any trouble ...they have cap space to upgrade their D ..they have assets to trade as well ...I trust Lou

What are you going on about man?

So much wrong with this.

Oilers = Stupid for drafting 1st so often. Not trying to get better
Leafs = Stupid for trading for a starting goalie to get better. Shoulda drafted more.

Most of the time it was said about the Leafs, that if it wasn't for Andersen, there's no way they make the playoffs. We'll be OK with Andersen.

Are you aware of the Leafs cap situation? I don't believe you are otherwise you'd know the cap won't be an issue. Like at all.

And why do they think there are no prospects left in the system? Admittedly there aren't any equal to the 1st, 3rd and 4th scoring rookies that we saw this year. But there are prospects in the system. Part of the reason the Marlies are still playing.

Are you one of those "Shoulda picked Laine" guys?

Nah, having a good goalie and making the playoffs to give the kids a taste of playoff hockey was probably the worst thing to happen to the leafs. If leafs were awful this year im sure there would be no negative talk about them.

So a goalie can't be good unless you trade a 1st round pick for him and then sign him to 5 years @5? I think you are missing my points over and over...

I think we are. What is your point?

Leafs rushed the rebuild (they one that's still ongoing)
They don't have cap room for any more defensemen
They have no prospects as they are all in the NHL.

Is that correct?

? Oilers stupid for drafting blah blah blah... what the hell are you on about.... just like misquoting me about not being able to afford the three big rookies... you are confusing me with someone else.... Laine? Actually, I was comforting dozens of Leafs fans on my FB earlier in the season when the majority already were jumping off the Matthews wagon and crying about picking the wrong guy.... Leafsnet even put a story out about Matthews only scoring in losses and "should we be worried?".... it was really pathetic.... I was telling them all to be patient, we are only two months into their rookie season...

Seems like you are trying to argue with a stereotype rather than what I have been saying.

So your saying go find a ramo, hiller, elliott, Johnson...or draft a Irving, ortio, keetley, McIlhiney...trust me giving up a first rounder and having a good goalie for 5 mil a season is a good idea
