they can protect, 1 G, 4 D, and 4 F right?

I don't see them losing any of their To 4 D

- PatC80

Yup.

Imagine.... probably the strongest defense in the league (With Columbus and Washington maybe?) and they're a team that traded Seth Jones away for a Centre...

Doubt they trade for a top pairing guy like Josi, trading one of their three top rookies is not part of the plan. More likely, get a good young stay at home guy and if the price is right move on Shattenkirk - for whom they give up no assets - only cash.
- winsix

I just don't see how Shattenkirk fills a need for our team when we already have Rielly and Gardiner.

I would rather sign Alzner instead of Shattenkirk

You can protect anyone you want and lose 1 protection slot if you do not wish to follow the structure you noted. (i think)

If they don't trade him they lose one of Josi/Ellis to UFA and lose Wilson or Jarnkrok in free agency.

Yeah if I were them I would trade him for assets

- Santo_44

I'm fairly certain that the Preds will protect 4 d-men and 4 forwards, so Ellis and Josi will be safe. It is more likely they will lose a forward.

Seven forwards, 3 d-man and one goalie or eight skaters and one goalie.

Because having more skilled players is a good thing. Shat has excellent shot suppression stats, and having another guy who can skate, pass and score is never bad.

Alzner is bigger and stronger, but we have two LD better than him. No point signing him unless he wants to sign for super cheap and play third line.

I get what you mean, but I don't see them getting rid of any of these 4 in the next year.

Nashville wants to win a cup, they'll need all 4 of these guys.

Especially when their 5-6 options are Irwin, Weber and Bittetto? Unless Carrier, Fabbro or Girard are magically ready.

Shattenkirk, would probably get $7M per, Alzner maybe 4M or 4.5M?

Money and term has to be a factor, and I think he signs with the Rangers, not us

They are weak on forward.

They don't need two top pairings and two number 3 D. In a couple years they are going to have to be paying Subban 9 million, Josi 8 million and Ellis 7 million. Almost 30 million tied up to 4 D.

Josi Subban Ekholm and Stone(free agent)

Trade Ellis for a top line winger and whatever assets you can get. It makes sense on their part.

Precisely, and that shot would probably get him 20 goals on the Leafs, who had a decent power play. You could fill out the defense with a guy like Manson who is likely to get moved.

Un(frank)ingbelieveable. I jumped on a train for a 2.5 hour Amtrak ride to go and watch the Sharks vs the Preds last year, just so that I could watch some good hockey in person.... a five hour round trip to not even watch my own (frank)ing team.

They can take that excuse and shove it up their bandwagoning arses

- lumlums

someone needs to less than politely tell the City of Ottawa and Sens fans.... about the Winnipeg Jets Version 1.

They might gave to make that choice in 3-4 years once they need to resign everyone.

They don't have to move anyone today.

That's what you're hoping for, not what they need to do.

You may be right, but judging from the way the preds have done business in the past few years, they have a boner for quality d-men. Weber/Suter etc. I think they protect the d-men, if they have to move one down the road for salary reasons, they will get paid, just like NJ did.

don't think its worth worrying about Nashville at the expansion draft...they'll be protecting their D-men....

but Columbus and Minnesota might have interesting decisions to make

With the expansion draft yes they do.......

They can't afford to lose a forward right now. Especially a center.

If LV takes a center they will have arguably the worst center depth in the league

Rangers have cap issues, don't see a need for a d-man there anyway. And if they lose Nash in the expansion draft, they will be looking to replace at the forward position.

They don't need all of them. If they sign a legitimate number 4 guy and trade Ellis for a position of weakness they are better because of it. And they don't lose a good forward to LV.

Smart asset management.
