yeah, i'm not seeing it. anahiem, nash and minny are all have deep defenses worth protecting in the expansion draft.

duck and wild will lose rackell/silfverberg/zucker if they overload on protecting dmen. those guys can’t be replaced on the ufa market.

for the preds, smith/jankrot are easily replaceable on the ufa market. top 4 dmen are not.

- Tumbleweed

agreed.
Its ok to have young expensive quality D.

i saw nothing from shattenkirk vs Toronto that suggested he was all that good. he got killed by the leafs. it's just one series though, who knows.

Meh, 6 games with a new team. Not the measuring stick in my opinion.

yeah, you would hope hunter/dubas have watched hours of tape and are looking at all kinds of internal metrics if they are going to throw money at shattenkirk...way beyond the one series.

i still think he ends up a ranger.

Moving out a 2.5m quality D man just to sign a more expensive 4 guy is not smart asset management.

Smart asset management was having 5 top D, and moving one for a quality forward...which they did.
No rush to move out anyone...their time for a cup is now and the next couple of years.

- Fakepartofme

Exactly.

Sorry Santo, seems alot of people disagree on the path you think the Preds should take to have "smart asset management".

Good talk though, you're totally entitled to your opinion.

He won't be worth the money he'll receive.

Obviously he'd make Toronto a better team, but he's not the guy I'd throw 7M at.

Cause he is 28 now and will be signed for 7 seasons. I know my math sucks, how is yours?
- PatC80

28 + 7 = 35......not Jagr 45 or Chara 40.....30 (frank)ing 5.

Worse case scenario, the last two years he declines and the average amount for a #4/5D in the NHL is $7M.

Shea Weber and Doughty have been getting $7M since 2010. PK is now at $9.5M.

Not saying Shat is in that league but in 5 years $7m is going to be on the low side.

Nobody's asking you to give up your lunch money, so chill.

Agree fully, just keep stock piling the gems and trade the excess for the pieces needed.
- BKups

Im a firm believer in the draft best player approach.

Leafs seem to have had a theme in the last 2 drafts.

first draft was all skill
second draft was alot of size and over agers.

I wouldnt be opposed to drafting a bunch of defenseman that project to be quick puck moving types and hope for a home run.

$7M for a #5 D-man will be average?

Similar to Gordie Howe and Jaromir Jagr.

If those three could do it, why can't Matt Martin?

At the very most, I think he gets $6.5m for 7 years. Yandle got $6.25M last year, with a flat/low rising cap, he shouldn’t get much more than that.

I wouldn’t want to go more than $6m x 6 years. Not sure if that will be enough.

Since there is varying opinion on fixing the D and really only 6 options...what is the best option:

1. Trade JVR for a DMan.
2. Trade Nylander for a DMan.
3. Draft a DMan that might work out in 3 years.
4. Trade the first rounder for a DMan.
5. Trade a package of rookies for a Dman.
6. UFA signing.

1 & 6 are the best options.

2 is dumb.
3 is too slow.
4 is alright but will it get you a good enough Dman.
5 see above.

There is really only two options to improve for next year. I have a feeling LoubasShanaCock will do 1 & 6 while continuing to stock the cupboards thru the draft.

reports were that Shattenkirk turned down a 7 yr/$42M deal from Tampa. I don't think he will get less than $7M.

Yep. We can bet that in 5 years Alzners of the league will be getting $7M as UFAs. Book it.

I think a combination of 1 and 4 could be interesting as well.

But I agree with your prediction.
