First of all I think he developed Stecher Baertschi Hutton Tryamkin Bo Granlund very well .

The people he sat deserved to be sat.

Secondly You want to make a significant improvement in a high end draft year. So tank for Nico but not for Dahlen . Rebuild over? You are one of the biggest voices all year about getting to end picks in a year of no top end draft picks bu next year when there is high end we don't go for them

- VANTEL

This seems to be a common theory but I really do question it.

Did Stecher improve throughout this season or was he really just playing to the potential he demonstrated in the pre-season?

Has Hutton improved significantly from his strong showing in the previous season's training camp and exhibition games?

Did Baertschi improve because of Willie or is this just what he looks like once he has some confidence and chemistry with a regular linemate? Sven seemed to give Travis Green a lot of credit for getting his game turned around when he first got traded.

Has Horvat improved because Willie 'challenged him' by making him a fourth liner to start this season? Or was it because he played a ton of minutes the previous season out of necessity, he didn't like how he performed under that pressure and, given his character, decided to take it upon himself to get better during the off-season?

Never a bad idea to just shoot from anywhere in OT

I would agree with ASL too. Roy changed the game more on how goalies play today.

NAH. Tony Esposito when they called his butterfly unorthodox.

I haven't seen too many pretty goals in OT, but there was this one.

Glen Hall started it.

Profly is what they call that hybrid butterfly now.

Eriksson is just a bad fit here, but with that said, I still expect him to be better next season
- Nucker101

He's a nice all-round player who's a useful veteran in a lot of different situations. His biggest problem is that he is overpaid and signed for too long.

He'd be a great third line winger at 3.5-4 per year over 3 or 4 years. Put him with a young offensive type center like Horvat to show him the ropes and he'd be great.

Unfortunately he scored 30 goals in his contract year so his market price was overly inflated.

I also think he's too similar to Sutter and they end up canceling out each other's strengths. Maybe on a playoff team that's going on a deep run you'd get better value out of having the two of them.

Glen Hall was a stand up goalie who flopped more than anyone.
Double stacking the pads etc.
Acrobatic was his style then Hasek took it to a crazy level.
Butterfly was all Esposito

How many top 5's did Boston have? what about LA?
- manvanfan

Boston and LA both had other 'special qualities' that contributed to their victories. Didn't need top picks or skill.

I recognize your avatar from "Ministry of silly walks" that was so funny

you totally missed what I was saying

absolutes are statements like "No coach can...." Limiting statements. Now re read the original post

- SMBDragon

Excuse me, reread the post!! This is what I think...Absolutes are things that are complete and pure, something that isn't part of or mixed into anything else in any way.

People have opinions and if they wish to say "No coach can" that is their opinion, the same as you state "Willie is a terrible coach" your opinion, neither are speaking in absolutes.

Valid points. Was it all accidental or visionary? Hard to say about Tree too. He wouldn't have gotten in if not for injuries. Then Granlund to make room for Guance was moved off 4th line center. They brought in Rodin to play wing in top 9. But injury forced him out after great pre-season. So Granlund was given his spot to hold. Rodin never made it back. Then Granlund kept showing results with better line mates and icetime.

No coach makes our team a playoff team. A good coach could put us on track, teach kids skills and balance the roster better than Willie did. But they can't score goals, unfortunately not many players on our team can either. A good coach might take our powerplay from 29th, but its going to be to 15th not to a top 5 powerplay. A coach can only do so much without the right players, and vice versa—a certain mix of players needs a certain coach to push the right strategies for the guys he has. Were at least two years away (If we get the right player this year and develop him properly) from being anything, minimum.

Agreed. It's not important to make the playoffs. But we don't need the players and fans to be left scratching their heads after every game asking "WTF was he thinking?"
