If you guys are in a win now mode, I'm assuming that you guys are going all in on Shatty. Maybe trade a pick or 2 for a top defenseman.
- SRam19

We may not have the cap space to go after Shatty with Jack/Samson coming up next year. Trading for a defender is probably the route they'll go but who knows. We need a good defender in the worst way.

Edit; Not sure we would be Shatty's top choice given the current state of the organization. I think we need a playoff series or two to rope that one.

Can we really trust what this organization has in mind for players?

I'm kidding. Kind of?

I really hope I'm excited by who comes back. I'm just not sold on this team being in the place where they can be trading top 10 picks. Got to give to get I suppose, but despite being a "weaker draft" there are some really promising prospects in that first round, especially that top 3.

Just to continue this thread...

If moves were made....

Kane-Eichel-Okposo
Nash-ROR-Reinhart
Ennis-Grigs/Erod-Haglin(or this type of player)
Dlo-Erod/Grigs-Gio
If a fourth line of Dlo-Grigs-Gio keep you out of the playoffs, much more is wrong with the team, fourth line usually only plays 7-9 mins a game.
I agree that I'd like to see Gionta move on, but he's hardly holding the team back.

- Sabres1523

I like the top 3, but there aren't any PK guys in that bottom 6. Larsson is probably our best guy in the bottom six right now. Girgs isn't that guy, and he's not the guy 5-on-5, and he's not the guy on the PP. I don't see any value in him. As for Dlo, i just really don't believe you can have a playoff team with a guy that gets 2 assists a year. I'd also rather have foligno than Gio, but i can see an argument for both.

- jcragcrumple

They need to decide who out of Larsson and grigs are they keeping. IMO they play the same style and have similar attributes no need to keep both. I agree on Dlo just don't think his lack of production would hurt much on the fourth line. Ideally hes only seeing maybe 20-30 games a year, but yeah probably are better options out there that can contribute on a nightly basis.

They're not even remotely the same. Guhle's put up great numbers but he's billed as a defence first player at the pro level. Guhle today is probably lightyears ahead of Gostisbehere defensively.
- Sabresfan-365

Guhle is not going to be a dynamic offensive guy. It's just not him

Canucks are in a rebuild and would probably take 1 or 2 of your high cap hit players for a pick. But that all depends on whether shattenkirk wants to join.

Is his extension still an issue after the year hes had, not saying he was bad, but nothing there would make me go more than 8 mill on a two year bridge. He certainly didn't break out like Jack did, although not on Jacks skill level either.
Reinhart makes it really hard to like Reinhart sometimes.

But he's so cerebral. He can think the puck into the net. His high hockey IQ help him pass all those written hockey test he has to take at the academy of hockey.

My father and I (both wanted Leon and Bennett respectively) always joke about how we are waiting for him to "beat teams with his mind".

I am starting to be truly amazed that he was touted over everyone including Nylander and Ehlers as a better prospect.

I wonder if some of O'Reilly's comments about not saying enough could be related to Sam.

When Sam was working with 90 all the time, he was noticeable.

Could be something? Probably nothing

Eh, he scores 20 goals on average per year. It isn't that he will be as big of a hit as Jack, but due to the fact he's coming off of his ELC it will be a large expenditure to sign both. Not to mention, Reinhart could take that next step next season. If he scored 25g and 60pts (which I think is attainable for him) we won't be seeing him sign for 2m.

In all fairness, Bennett is looking to be quite a bust as well. I'd prefer any of Draisaitl, Nylander, Pastrnak, or Ehlers at this point. I know I'm being captain hindsight. Dude rode shotgun on Jack's wing for 40 plus games and is a fixture on PP1. He should produce WAY more than he is. Most games I hardly know he is even playing. Lastly, the next time he beats a guy one-on-one will be his first.

"To me, there’s been an obvious disconnect between the coaching staff and the players. The coaches tell them to do one thing, and they do it another. It’s not about the system, it’s about us as a group playing a certain way and at times, we didn’t do that.”

-Brian Gionta.
....and its a hell of a lot easier to fire the coach than 1/2 the team.

This is very good news. Let's hope it happens. Somebody has to take the fall for this season. That's just the way it is.

Regarding our top 6 next year, we could actually have some series holes in it:

ROR, Jack and Rhino = locked.
Oko would be a lock but his unknown health scare might impact his ability to play
Kane - I think he's gone. Two reasons: 1) Buffalo isn't his kind of town - he's a big city guy, 2) the guy has never played in an NHL playoff game. At best, the Sabres are an iffy playoff team moving forward. I think he'll want to go to a winning franchise that's always in the playoffs. If Murray can't sign him to a reasonable extension for both parties, he needs to trade him for a Top 3 D-man.

We gotta hope that one or two of Bailey/Baptiste and Nylander can take it to the next level next year.
