Every player has to do what's right for them at the time. But you have to think that if too many of these guys forego signing with the team that drafted them, they'll stop being drafted altogether unless they're on the Eichel/Gaudreau level. It'll be slow, maybe over the next 10 years or so, but it will happen if too many of these guys spurn the teams that took a chance on them.

If I'm GMTM, and I'm not, I try to sign Cal and Malone and play both Sunday vs. TB. I lure Cal by saying he'll likely develop in Rochester next year but We'll give him leave to play with team USA if he makes that team.

I wouldn't be shocked to see the Leafs take a bit of a step back next year, like the Flames did last year. That defense, while slightly less of a tire fire than Buffalo's, needs significant improvement as well.

They are in a position with roster players/prospects where they will be able to upgrade pretty easily though.

They actually waited until they are a decent team, and now have a glut of forwards and prospects to add a D man.

Calgary made huge adds the summer after they surprised everyone by making it to the 2nd round (Hamilton and Frolik).

Its not necessarily about who they add but whats already there. They've gotten historic performances from rookies to make the playoffs a possibility. If they go from that to just "good sophomore" seasons they'll see some regression.

I wouldn't be shocked to see the Leafs take a bit of a step back next year, like the Flames did last year. That defense, while slightly less of a tire fire than Buffalo's, needs significant improvement as well.

I am expecting a step back as well but to be expected. I think this year has been a huge success no matter what happens. Will it suck if they lose out and don't make playoffs? Of course. But for first time in decades this team is headed in the right direction with the right management team with the right philosophy.

I wouldn't mind if they were in the lottery next year. A couple of big time defencemen are eligible next year for the draft.

Honest Question(s):

How different do you think this season would have been if Eichel played the whole year?

Or if the other major injuries didn't happen?

What if the injuries happened to Toronto, would they be in the same boat?

Not that I am trying to justify this season, but that could be a huge component to it.
