Nighthawk likes old school. Has paid his dues. His view is that young guys need to as well. Now how that's measured and so forth is not clearly defined when getting into these back and forths.

I applied it to my hockey & baseball. It got me more success & fun as much as that could be. Not everyone is destined to a pro career. Ppl like u cannot comprehend what athletes do other than work hard & lift weights & score points. Idk if u would ever get the point i am making til u try it if not too late.

ppl like me? you seem pretty angry for some reason. Clearly you weren't very good at sports, since you need to feel smart over a comments section

Better brush up on your hockey IQ, you're starting to sound crazy.

What exactly is hockey IQ other than jock speak?
For me its being a student of the game & never getting complacent.
Never thinking enough is enough & there is always more to do.

- Nighthawk

i don't get the sense he's a student of the game... seems clueless, lacking interest, etc...

Thats seems to be what JV is. Never had to think much & relied on talent alone.
He either smells the roses or disappears like so many others.

I agree but also disagree to some extent. I think hockey IQ is about good instincts, which allows you to react a little bit faster than those that have to read, process what you've learned and then react. Some guys naturally understand the flows of the game and can get that jump, others have to work at it and think about what they are doing

Instincts seem to be an innate ability yes.
Hockey IQ i believe is more about all things.
By that its study of videos of oneself & others.
Thats just a taste and goes as far as a player wants to take it.

I hear you. The ability to slow the game down and anticipate is a gift. Can be learned to some extent but it's like size you can't really teach it but you can work on being stronger.

On the topic of instincts.

Growing up & playing as a catcher in baseball i had a viewing perspective that no other player had. It was one thing to call the pitches but there was much more to it.
Batters hands & where they were in the box & right on down to height & weight.
Those were just a few things to note sizing up a batter.
Example: a tall strong batter i called pitches down & away to take him out of his comfort zone & strengths. Go down there a bit then come back up & in & tie him up.
Idea was getting into his head & make him hit what he didn't want to. From there i could play with him & let the pitcher own him.

Later on as an adult i was a SS & everything i learned as a catcher & batters tendencies made me very good on defence. Positioning & anticipation became a natural instinct. Many ball players learn instincts eg OF's crack of the bat & r on the run automatically without need of determining & wasting time that can make or break the play of a catch or not.

Now onto hockey...

For some reason many of my hockey friends as a kid & an adult are goalies.
Thats strange since that is about 6 of them lol
So noticing the best ot them seemed like they had no holes or baited players to shoot where they wanted the shot to go. So when we talk hockey i picked their brains to get an edge against other goalies. Common denominator was backhands were the hardest shot for a goalie to get a good read. So i practiced my backhand on the ice & ball hockey. It did work when in a game but marginally due to i didn't have the greatest backhand get off every shot. It was also the hardest shot shot to master btw. Anyone can flip the puck easy enough but circumstances rarely make that easy.
So often its a rush or reflex move or poor position to get it up. So when watching high speed NHL games or SO's i admire the players who can roof it with ease.
