Last year at this time we were all hoping for losses so we could get the #1 pick. This year we are in a playoff race and everyone is freaking out over 1 loss. You people are something else. No one expected us to make the playoffs this year ... nobody.

Just enjoy the ride people. if they make the playoffs this year it's a bonus. Our 3 best players are rookies. The majority of the league would kill to be in our position right now with our young roster and our cap flexibility. Marner and Matthews are going to be stars for the next 10-12 years.

If they make the playoffs great. If they don't then we get another top 15 pick and continue to build.

But FFS stop over reacting to every loss like it's the end of the world for this team.

Trouba has been pretty (frank)ing good this season. I'd still take Rielly over him slightly. Like Turris last year Rielly won't be himself from the rest of the year with a high ankle sprain. He'd be shutdown if this were last year.

Anyways, if Trouba is willing to sign a deal with the Leafs I would offer a lot for him right now. The Leafs need a guy who can play 22+ mins a night. A difference maker on the back end.

Good Point: Hard not to be disappointed over a loss like that one. Zaitsev doing backwards cartwheels while Leafs were on the powerplay against a medium smelly team was over the top for me. I'll take solice in the fact that Ek predicts the Leafs will be tenth in the conference and out of the playoffs with 87 points. That means he is predicting the Leafs will get 11 points in their last 14 games. I would gladly give odds and make a significant wager against that.

He's not wrong. It's the reality of our fanbase. A Stanley cup winner when we win. The worst team in the league when we lose.

I think the bigger concern is our so called franchise player has been absolutely garbage for 8 games in a row now with no contributions, add to that the Leafs are paying a guy $6.25 million a season for basically the same defensive results as the last three coaches.

Also I don't buy the young team part, there are seven teams younger than the Leafs and four of them are in the playoffs and are not defensively inept like them.

Those teams don't have 3 19 year olds as their best players.

i think its unfair to judge a 19 year old rookie who has already put up 55 points for going through a slump

as for the bolded... who are these 7 teams? according to quant hockey there are only 3 teams younger than the leafs and not one of them are in a playoff spot

Disagree with you on Matthews. He has played all year with a couple of rookies and been absolutely the best Leaf. With respect to the defensive issues - that's a GM issue as well as a coaching issue. Hard to get defensive results with two NHL caliber defensemen and a maybe in Zaitsev. The GM will address the defense this off season, both the draft and extra money off the cap will be used. I would expect to also see one significant trade.

You are going to be one sad man when they give a "maybe" 4 million a season this offseason.

Columbus 25.805 years
Carolina 25.557 years
Winnipeg 25.258 years
Buffalo 25.423 years
Edmonton 26.120 years
Tampa 26.241 years
New York Rangers 28.227 years (oldest in the league)

Toronto: 25.606 years

the leafs are the 4th youngest team in the league. not one team younger than them are in a playoff spot. HNIC talks out of their ass for the most part.

also... nhl numbers has info dating back to the off season... just look at the number of players signed... not even full rosters

quant hockey stays up to date

The average age is useless. I dont care if a team has 5 20 year olds in their bottom 6 or bottom pairing.

The Leafs best players are all 19 and 20 year olds. Half the team are rookies. What makes their average age go up in the Polaks, Hunwicks, and Martins occupying the 4th lines and bottom pairings.
