Points shmoints. He wins hockey games by preventing the puck from entering his net consistently. Also kills penalties, blocks shots, lays timely hits, makes smart outlet passes to his partner, who can then rack up the secondary assists by bringing up the ice.

By definition, he does what a defenseman should, very, very well.

I'd argue that most in the list don't contribute as much in their end as he does. Comme ci comme ca. That's what forwards are for. Not everyone can be Bobby Orr.

I don't think good defensemen get enough credit for doing their jobs well anymore. That's where the cracks show up in the analysis. After all, winning the game is the object, not blasting pucks on net for easy stops, overcommitting on pinches and getting hosed for odd-man rushes the other way. Also, just my cave-man opinion, but a defenseman that doesn't kill penalties isn't a very good defenseman. That's my metric.

He only leads the league in PP Assists and logs around 25 minutes of ice time per game on one of the worst teams in the league. Take him any day of the week over at least 1/3 of this list.
