Let's be honest; this list is based on two things: your love of advanced stats and your bias.

Put Orlov and Niskanen as THE #1, playing the same type of minutes as guys like Burns then see how quickly those advanced stats dip.

Any list that doesn't have Suter, Weber, and Pietrangelo on it is trolling for hits...

There's nothing to suggest anything of the sort.

No.

There's literally nothing that suggests playing a guy with good underlying numbers MORE would cause those numbers to drop.

There literally is. You're going to tell me that a 4th line forward with solid analytics is going to have the same success in a 1st line role?

Coaches knowing how to properly use players can be a big reason for their success. Some players need certain minutes and usage to bring out their strength, but when you ask more of them they fold. Pretty common stuff.

We're not talking about 4th line forwards, are we?

It doesn't matter, the theory is the same. Usage is usage. Just because a player succeeds in a lesser role doesn't mean they will succeed in a larger role.

Niskanen is having a good year but on the deepest team in the league, with arguably the best goalie and on a team the scores a ton. probably gets quite a few secondary assists out of that. How great would he be on colorado? How does Nick Leddy not make the top 30? he has more points than orlov or niskanen, i realize hes not top 15 but he is top 30

Niskanen is benefiting from a lot of things with his situation in Washington, but at the end of the day he's still one heck of a dman regardless. He's an ideal guy to man your second pair, but he's not a #1.

RE: Leddy. He doesn't fit Tanner's analytics mold.

I have no issue with Niskanen but better than shea weber hes not. weber still plays top minutes has 38 points and is physical and mean. Just cant get Tanner dumoing on the guy and i dont even like weber, but you have to respect him

Don't even have to read to know this is a top 30 list of offensive dmen.
- Gerk

It's not, well not entirely anyway, he didn't put the guy tied for 10th in scoring amongst defensemen in.

Mr. Tanner,

I am impressed that you at least put a list out based on feedback from posters about a blog you made.

I disagree with a lot of things you write and I don't read you very often, but at least you had the guts to put a list up. Nice job.

Unless you edited it already it was perfectly clear to people who can read.

Leddy has the same amount of points as Niskanen, in two more games. Leddy has 20 even strength points to Niskanen's 22 and Orlov's 21. The possession numbers aren't even close. Quit lyin.

Leddy is 6th d-man on his team in short handed ice time. Niskanen sees almost two more minutes a game short handed than Leddy. Leddy sees more than a minute more a game on the PP, and yet only has 3 more PPP than Niskanen.

Need I go on?

i didnt say he was better than either play did I? I said he is a top 30 player, please read with comprehension

edit this is directed at tanner who says you have 4 #1 guys. Leddys possesion numbers werent good to start like the entire isles team, over the last 20 games the teams gone up like 6 or 8 percentage points. leddy is similar to those players

Muzzin has been on the ice for more 5v5 goals against (53) than 5v5 goals for (38), and not just this season, but over the past 4 years, yet he's supposedly a #1 defenseman. Okay...

21st in points, garbage in possession. Doesn't play the PK. Yeah, top-30.
