He's 38. His whole game has always been based on his speed and skating ability. He has never been a great positional D-man or been particularly great in his own end. He is not simply pacing himself. His level of speed and skating ability can no longer cover up for his other deficiencies. - furso27
Correct.
All that said, he thinks the game better now than he used to and minimizes mistakes versus how he used to play. I don't have a huge issue (at all) with 51 at his salary.
But I also don't think he has some playoff phone booth he's gonna go into either. |

Campbell is making 1.5 MIL. While never a Norris candidate he plays 18min a game and tied for D lead at +11
That's not a bad value for that cost. Not many teams have a #4 dman with those numbers at that salary
The Hawks GA is top 10 in the league while not playing the boring trap game. He has helped the Hawks transition game FAR more than that mouth breather Gustafson or that sloth Svedberg they trotted out there last year - PatShart
Vs Last Season:
#4 D - Campbell > TVR
#5/6 D - Kempny/TVR > Svedberg/Gus/Slowsival...
My 2 cents on Oduya, why give anything now when he'll be UFA and eligible for a 35+ contract next year? If he had not gotten hurt, I'd have a lot more interest in him for the playoffs, not sure how big of an upgrade he'd be right now, definitely risky + too much AAV remaining vs cap...

No argument. He's an upgrade over what they had last year for sure.
I just don't think he's seriously "dogging it" saving up for some magical postseason burst. He is what he is. You might get another 5% or less effort out of him in the playoffs—just like every other guy in the pstseason.
But expressing that opinion makes me a "know-it-all." FFS.

Side note....Rockford is playing Vinny and Forsling tonight...sitting Schmaltz and Kero. My guess is both Vinny and Forsling stay at Rockford until after the trade deadline, therefore saving a bit more money for a deadline deal. Schmaltz and Kero obviously will come back up for Saturday game. If CapFriendly is correct that will leave us with about 1.9 million in cap space. Not sure how that equates with the prorating and such at the deadline. |

Instead of this ridiculous week off, the league should just give the players an extra day on either side of the All-Star break, an extra day at Christmas, and one or two more days off during the season.

I think the players asked for this. |

Still think it would be better to tack the week off with the all star break. |

Capfriendly has current cap space of 4.6 million, which equates to 6.3 at deadline.
Once Schmaltz and Kero are called back up that cap space will dwindle to 1.8 million....which I believe equates to around 2.46 million at deadline. Don't quote my numbers on that though. I am just spitballing here. |

Interesting thing related to Campbell - Aaron Ekblad is having a relatively poor season this year with Florida and many think its because he misses his D partner #51. That's a convenient excuse for me, but Campbell, despite some bad errors in his own zone, does some good stuff out there too. He is value for the money now but there isn't a lot of surplus tread on his tires. |

oh I don't buy the whole "coasting until the playoffs thing" either lol
I have no problem with his game, experience, etc. He's never a guy that's "dogged" it and is good in the transition game too. |

Could be he's a little worn out from the minutes. Maybe a fresh campbell is better, like at the start of the season. Nothing wacky about that. |

I would love to see them return to 2/7 and 4/51 as your top 4 and then place 57 with 6 or 42 or 32.
Figure 57 isn't going to be here long term as I'm sure Vegas will pick him in the expansion draft, so........ |

i agree...this is really dumb...but what do you expect with NHLPA and bettman...
compressed schedule cuz of world cup...next year olympics and the nhl will cave and allow players to participate...

Vegas might snap TVR up but no team is really going to be able to protect their #4-7 Dmen anyway so LV will have plenty to choose from. At his salary he is a bargain but his slot is really as a #6D - they could pass on him and take a Hawk forward instead.

Or Darling (if he resigns) - tvetter
Darling will not resign with us unless we trade Crawford before the EXP draft which the return would be almost nothing. But I would still do it, the market will be flooded with Goalies. Darling is no longer a RFA he is UFA. no idea how bad Gilbert is but it only costs the caps $170K Vs the Cap and guards against injuries. They owe no compensation unless he plays 1/2 the games and they goto Conf final. The hawks should find a Few vets that are fringe NHL guys and sign them to Fully guaranteed contracts and tell them they are slated to start in Rockford and will get called up if needed. 1 mil is pretty good money for a fringe NHL player

Ya, I have no issue at all with that signing now, because Kempny has shown himself to be a great athlete but with a lot of rough edges. Campbell is a great value for what he is right now and if he keeps his game simple, he can help them. He's just not what he was ten 5-10 years ago and never will be. |

I'm sure Wiz and others will have a lot more detail on these kids as we get closer to the actual draft, but here is HN's initial ranking for the 2017 class:
http://www.thehockeynews....017-no-sure-thing-at-no-1 - pdx2ord
My seven rounds are up on draft site.com and I have most assuredly written MORE about my top 31 than the hockey news has.
It is a draft that is loaded with players that are equal in that they all haven't progressed enough to guarantee themselves reason to select them in slots in the mid first round all the way to the mid fourth round....plenty of warts on the kids but the right scouting staff might get lucky and although I have to assume every team would take Patrick first I can't overlook Hischier because he is so offensively quick. I like Kole Lind for the hawks.
He is a scorer and is still developing but he is sneaky good.
