If my wife ever left me for Max Talbot, I think I'd applaud her.

Yeah, I mean you're talking about two of THE BEST dmen in the history of the game. There are some excellent dmen playing right now. Doughty, Karlsson, Subban, etc..., but I'm not sure you can even put them in the same conversation as Bourque, Lidstrom or even someone like Brian Leetch. Those guys were a cut above the rest.

One thing that made Bourque and Lidstrom particularly great was their ability to keep their high level of play until their last days as a player. You can find very few players in general who played the way they did until the end.

Leetch is another one. The guy was obviously an offensive dynamo, but he was also a great player defensively. He didn't have the physical game that Bourque did (while not a bone crusher, his physical game was underrated), but he was a guy you want out there late in a game with a one goal lead.

To me, that's why Letang should have beaten Subban. Letang was a better all-around defender than Subban, and the offensive games were close enough to give him the edge. In my opinion.

And I'm not saying you need to be some knuckle dragging meathead who does nothing but hit people to win. But, to me, you should excel on both sides of the puck to win the Norris.

So will everyone with internet access.

I once asked him if I could refer to him as "Superstar." He gave me the most Republican look he could conjure and said, "Max is fine."

Haha. That's why she got to go onto the ice and meet Claude Giroux. If I'd gotten Talbot's jersey instead, she'd never forgive me.

I agree. I think Letang has been snubbed a couple of times. He may never win the Norris, but when you really look at his impact to the long-term success of his respective team his ability is truly recognized.

A team's dependent success on their #1 dmen should be part of the voting process if it isn't already.

It's still amazing to me he became a Flyer after he was basically the catalyst for the Pens taking them down that year.

I don't think he was the catalyst. He was the reason the team found life late in Game 6, because Dan Carcillo was an idiot. If anything, Kunitz and Guerin were the ones that irritated me the most.

And I still say it was a phantom hooking call on Jeff Carter in game 2.

Well, not trying to have a semantic debate, but that's exactly what a catalyst is. He was the reason they found life... that's a catalyst.

Oh, I thought you mean throughout the series. Yes, in the clincher, he was.

Dude was the (frank)ing worst. Well, actually, he was better than Rinaldo. And Billy Tibbets. But he was pretty bad, and pretty dumb.

the fascination is what made it so awful, or hilarious, depending on the perspective.

i know of tibbetts, but i was fairly young to really know too much about a guy who spent so little time here. Wasn't he the guy with the sexual assault baggage of some sort?

Raped a girl, did some time for assault. Penguins signed him, Flyers traded for him. The fans booed him on home ice and he was subsequently released.

Carcillo was entertaining, I'll give him that. He never was accused of being dull. The sad thing was that he actually had legit skill, but he could never reign himself in. But he chose to be the circus act instead.

I don't know that "name" will be important. I think if you finish in the top five in points amongst defensemen, you're automatically part of the equation.

EDIT: Yes, certain names are important, but "name" alone isn't enough.

Schultz in Norris disgusting is stupid. He puts up points at the top of the second tier dmen because we play high event hockey and he almost always has Crosby Malkin or Jessel on the ice.

Sorry but no 2nd pairing and for most of the year 3rd pairing dman should get a top 15 vote.

yeah, carcillo was a lot closer to matt cooke as far as being a legitimate player doubling as a joke than he was to rinaldo just being an absolute embarrassment.

Here's my 2 cents on Schultz contract. We have 1 year of rfa control left. So we could just sign him modestly this year on a 1 year deal. Then he cashes in as a UFA the following year and I think he gets nisky style payment. Nisky seems like a great comp. Schultz signs with a good team for something like 6 by 6 and anchors their 2nd pairing and turns into an expensive but quality contributor for that team.

I think he would take a little less money from us. So if we offer 6 years by 5 when he's UFA he accepts. If we sign him this offseason long-term I think we could get him a bit cheaper like 6 years 24-27.

Expansion draft complicates everything. I don't think we want to lose one of sheary, hagelin, hornqvist at the same time we lose bonino UFA.

So we either trade Maatta before the expansion draft for a duchene like return hopefully and protect 7 by 3 or we leave Schultz unsigned and gamble LVS has no interest in a 1 year rental on a guy who was awful on the oilers who were basically expansion level team good.

Not sure if schultz is a late bloomer like nisky or if edmonton is just a cluster(frank) and can't teach a young guy how to play. I'm leaning on the latter. I think schultz has the ability to a plus defender on the 2nd pairing. Daley being an average 2nd pairing guy and schultz having the capability to be a guy like nisky on the 2nd pairing.

Bottom line I think we sign schultz long-term and he rewards us for saving his career by taking 750-1 less than he could UFA. Schultz also has limited need to sign a long-term deal this year as he banked about 15 from edmonton so he can take the risks of a 1 year deal to get a mega-UFA contract. If he gets hurt he would still walk away from the game with 20 million pre-tax. But I do think he likes it here and will take a modest discount.

I'm pretty sure Sheary doesn't have to be protected. Are you saying, sign Schultz and go 8 skaters instead of 7 F 3 D?

I see 7F 3D as...
Sid
Geno
Kessel
Hornqvist
Hagelin
Sundqvist
Rust or Wilson (probably Rust)

Letang
Dumo
Schultz (if resigned)

or do they do Letang, Schultz, Maatta?
