Yes, I agree with the overall direction the organization is headed. Change takes time and Hextall is owed that much at least. Same with the coach.

However, there are some things the coach and the GM have done along the way that deserve criticism. This can be acknowledged while still favoring the general direction of the team. The siding with management on every little thing, no matter how apparent, is frustrating.

I know that sounds like conflicting opinions but it's really not.

Well take solace in the fact that those you accuse of siding with management on every little thing, have absolutely zero control over what happens with the Flyers.

Welcome. Its interesting that you are fed up with the pro slant of the posters here in that you echoed some of the same points that those same posters have stated. Hakstol does use analytics.
- MJL

Do you think Hakstol uses analytics as his primary decision making tool? Secondary? Worse?

My opinion is that it is rather unimportant to him based on what we as fans have access to and his personnel decisions. He may look at analytics but it certainly isn't a main driver in his decision making. I wish it was titled a little differently.

I will concede that he could be using in-house analytics that us fans don't have access to. So I can't say for sure.

No coach uses analytics as his primary decision making tool. The Flyers and Dave Hakstol use analytics, like most teams. Hextall has talked about it in the past.

How quick you moved off of the actual subject on to me. If your on the correct side, why resort to that? Why not discuss the actual topic? I don't need an answer.
- MJL

I think you just bring it out in people. what's the topic? Is it that I choose to believe what Tim P says over you? You do seem to be a bright guy, but Tim has the resume. I don't know what your qualifications are other than that you seem very confident that you know everything.

The topic is discussing Pannacio's comments, and offering an opinion on them. Not discussing each other.

“There's a lot of lessons that young people have to learn,” Hextall said. “We've all gone through it. I've gone through it; you go through it with your kids. We've all got to learn lessons. This is part of the process of young players growing in the pros. That's all it is. ...

That was a direct quote from Hextall in Tim's blog. Does that not seem to suggest there is some off ice/maturity component at play here? Or just BS?

- Just5

Sounds like he means that sometimes in order to get better you need to learn so sometimes you get benched so you can work on stuff in practice and watch games. Doesn't suggest anything about off ice or immaturity to me.

I think that like probably all other NHL coaching staffs, he and his staff have many tools in their toolbox for evaluating players.

she isnt a reporter, she's an average fan who is a season ticket holder who has concerns. questions like that are to be expected. i see nothing wrong with it
- nastyflyergirl

She's not allowed to ask questions about analytics. Those types of things are forbidden. The Flyers have the greatest analytics department with the very very best statisticians. They have numbers you wouldn't even dream of understanding! I can't believe this girl-who was very very unprofessional by the way- questioned the Flyers management and decision makers. Doesn't she know these guys know more than any fan- let alone a female fan. I mean the nerve of this woman to ask a question that so many would like to know the answer to! She's lucky to not be fired. Hak could have her fired from her job. He could. He could destroy her.

Check out this exchange between some guy and retired NHL player now analyst for TSN Patrick O'Sullivan. He's suggesting that there is other data out there that fans don't have access to. Hmmm...

@ViewFromBensch 7:55 PM - 7 Feb 2017 If you're not using all the data available to make your team better you're behind the times.

@realPOSULLIVAN 7:56 PM - 7 Feb 2017 There's other data teams use besides all the garbage based on shot attempts. You can't find it online because it's expensive.

NHL teams are so far past the analytics that we as fans have access to. Analytics like corsi, and any based on it, are archaic.

Let me just tell you Dave Hakstol is such a great guy. Such a great guy. It was very very classy of him to respond to that total loser woman -- she was not nice, not very nice to him. And I will tell you that she got schlonged by Hakstol. Believe me. Her question was a total disaster.

Patrick O'Sullivan is one of the most ardent analytics deniers on social media. He talks about it constantly to berate those who use them.

He wasnt denying analytics with that statement. He's speaking the truth. Which is that NHL teams have analytics that are far superior to what we the fans have access to.

Obviously.

But a plumber also has their favorite tool to do their job. Doesn't mean it's the best one.

It's possible in their decision making they're favoring the wrong metric.
