Lol at this STH thing from what I've read on the Tweeter
- Mononoke

Hakstol called MacDonald a top 3 NHL defenseman, and that the team needs his ability to get out of his own end more than Ghost's offense. That he was so important for Ghost last year, and that he's been tremendous this year. Said that spending a week practicing is the best way to restore Ghost's confidence, and that's why he scratched him; also because of playing a lot of back to backs...or something. He'll be back next game probably. Didn't like when people asked why the veterans aren't held accountable.

Hextall said they really want Bellemare to be re-signed because he's an outstanding PKer, and that he'd be proud to call him his son or some weird poop like that.

We have a few people on here who are STH, maybe they could add.

Usually somebody posts the notes or a recap or something. This was the STH meeting or whatever?

In my opinion it has been based on drafting.
- MJL

Very specific. Thanks for another thrilling debate. What team in the NHL currently isn't "based on drafting?"

It's a rhetorical question because I don't care about whatever stupid spin you try to put on your answers. I think enough has been said.

Good day, sir

Interesting that a top 3 NHL defenseman wound up spending half a year in the minors in the prime of his career. That doesn't reflect well on Hexy

yep and (frank) em for it. i love the cap. and oh yeah of course it was big. if youre saving around 3 million each on hossa and keith each, thats an extra six million dollar stud that they get to keep for the run.

Without it I think they get only 1...MAYBE 2 cups. There's no way they stay this competitive for this long without it

by and large the flyers drafting has seemed to be pretty solid though. whatever's going on with giroux. if thats a cliff coming, it came fast enough to where i wouldnt exactly blame management for not being able to see that.
- stayinthefnnet

Actually the Flyers drafting outside the first round have been pitiful. The jury is still out for Hextall. Clarke and Homer were terrible in those rounds. Pretty hard to build a team with first rounders, free agency and undrafted free agents in the cap world. Look at the red wings model on how to build a team without top 5 picks and win cups.

If you didn't care, you wouldn't have made this post. It's just talking pucks. It's not personal for me.

You have a good day also.

Nope. Not unless they drafted better while competing (instead of horribly, like really horribly) to supplement their core or traded a few guys at their value peak. They also needlessly traded a ton of picks for players that did nothing. A couple bad contracts too to counteract the good, cap circumventing ones.

It's actually crazy to think they did sell off some quality players, even if they weren't what they are today (which is another matter of evaluation perhaps) like Nick Leddy, Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien, Michael Frolik, Troy Brouwer........and out of ALL of those trades combined, they got exactly 1 player who turned into anything. Kevin Hayes. Who chose to sign out of college with the Rangers instead.

I wouldn't like being asked about my organization's inner workings by some entitled-feeling yahoo who has no idea what it's like to run an NHL team.

All mho, of course.

The point was made earlier that maybe the Red Wings are given a little too much credit. The Red Wings drafted Nik Lidstrom in the 3rd round with the 53rd pick in the draft. 21 picks earlier they drafted another defenseman which was Bob Boughner. Did they really know what they were getting there? They then drafted Federov in the 4th round. If they knew those players were going to be that good, why did they wait? I'm sure there were some circumstances involved.

Also did they just get lucky to have a player drafted in the 6th round in Datsyuk, who wasn't even their first pick in the 6th round, Adam Deleeuw was, and then Zetterberg in the 7th round. There were again probably some extenuating circumstances with those players, but honestly, they got incredibly lucky.

Even if he was trying to say that he can adequately play in a top 1-3 position on d in the NHL..

What is a really emphatic way to say no.. I got it..

No, not even close, never and no.

I just don't believe the notion you can only build the core of a team with only top 5 picks to win a cup. Drafting in any sport has an element of luck. However, a good scouting department also develops a sound methodology in evaluating all prospects to ensure better results then others. I think there is more then just the randomness of luck that build the the wings, or Dave Tallon building the core of the Hawks outside the top ten outside of Kane and Toews.
