The Leafs need a couple grizzled vet d-men on the back end who can clear the night and deal with poop teams like the Bruins. Think Todd Gill and Jamie McCowen... (they might be an upgrade over Marincin!)

I was sitting here this morning looking up hockey poop just like usual and i remembered we had aquired Teemu Hartikaenen's nhl rights a few years back for mark fraser. He was always looked at as a Komorov type player, fiesty, has better size then him and plays each forward position. I remember hearing his skating was brutal but has improved a lot over the years. Just checked his stats and they're pretty damn impressive!

Has any one been watching the KHL games or followed him at all?

I wonder if they could bring him over now that hes in his prime with years playing in the K, something like the Komo situation. Makes me wonder boys!!

keep quiet.
this is the kind of stuff that has made Lou legendary ... they probably claimed the Russian guy 'cause he's best friends with some dude in the KHL

I can remember openly laughing at Macoun... that guy never broke a stick taking a shot ... but he probably went through 3-4 a game slashing guys.

I believe that they don't need to protect Zaitsev, and therefore would protect Gardiner and Rielly. Upgrade Carrick if you can - if there's a deal to be made. I'm not suggesting a Jvr or Nylander deal for Trouba either... rather more of a second tier guy like Scandella (MIN) or Forsling, TvR or Kempny (CHI) or Dillion or Braun(SJ) or something like Bieksa/Stoner + Manson/Theodore combo .... all these guys are going to be available or likely some combination of them during the expansion LasVegas draft.

I like your ideas other then the Bieksa/Stoner. Pretty hard to pay them those salaries for another year and have those cinder block feet taking time from the younger guys. Maybe you could buy them out at seasons end? Maybe it could work

EDIT- didn't realize Cowens buyout is for next year. So no room

I know that I for one never said to protect Marincin ahead of Carrick... anyone who has should be ashamed of themselves. Marincin isn't one of the worst d-men ever... but his performance in the past few games has been horrid. The three penalties he took (one of which really shouldn't been called imo) are indicative of his poor positioning and slowness to respond.

I can only assume at this point he's being kept around as expansion fodder - which brings me to my main point.

Since Carrick isn't lighting the house on fire - although he's been pretty decent in the last little while (again imo)... what should be considered is a trade that would see the Leafs bringing in a D-man in exchange for Carrick + + which would give the Leafs three good D resources that they can protect.

Leafs have following depth on D:

#1: --
#2: Rielly
#3: Zaitsev
#4: Gardiner (fringe 4/5 D-man)
#5: --
#6: Polak, Hunwick, Marincin
#7: Carrick
+ then a few younger guys that project to be NHL players in 1-2 years from now (Nielsen, Dermott).
haven't seen enough Detroit games last couple of years to have a decent opinion on Marchenko.

When Dermott is ready to go full-time on NHL, it's the end of Gardiner's days at the Leafs - it's as simply as that.
He's projected to be as valuable on offense and PP, but with better defensive skills.

Leafs need d-men that can play d.

FFS you guys.

A few games ago:

90% of posters on here:
"Marincin is actually playing quite well, looking good after his return from injury - great to have a good 4/5 d-man in him - let's expose Carrick instead of him during expansion draft".

After last 3 games:

90% of posters on here:
"Marincin is the worst d-man ever, should never be in NHL, disgrace for the beautiful game of hockey".

I don't mind people being very outspoken about a specific opinion they have - even if it's completely different than mine.
What I do find sad is people changing their opinions every 4 days.

(above goes as well for some of you re the complete Leafs team: from "yes!! playoffs!!' to ''here we go again... trailer from cliff team - typical leafy" ....)

well here's the deal... Bieksa and Stoner both have another year left and what really is screwing Anaheim over is that Bieksa has either a NTC or NMC - which means that Anaheim has to use one of their protect spots for him...

if the Leafs were to acquire Bieksa and Manson/Theodore (I believe both Manson and Theodore are expansion draft exempt)... which would NOT need to cost much ... probably just pro-contracts going the other way... then the Leafs would get another good young defenseman at the cost of carrying Bieksa's salary during his vacation on Robidas Island.

Cowan's skating is best described as "glacial". You can figure out the rest.

Yeah the Leafs had some dominant games. Marincin looked decent coming out of I injury.

It was short lived and he is back to playing like he always played.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious for everyone

The leafs have

Michalek~4 million
Liach~4.5 million
Greening~2.7 million
Robidas~3 million
Polak~2.5 million

All coming off the books
Plus Hortons 5.3 million is a non factor

While only needing to resign Hyman, Brown and Zaitzev

They will have boat loads of space

One more after the this. Before the rookies need a raise.

Same with Bozak, JVR and Komarov.

Leafs are sitting just fine and dandy salary cap wise
