If you need a body checker you don't use a 6th overall pick to get him, it's the combination of scoring and being a heavy forechecker was why he was picked there.
Your scenario is as subjective as mine, Ehlers may very well have blossomed with all the injuries last year. We'll never know. - LeftCoaster
Exactly, but again, we had no one like Jake in the system and no one on the team that was willing to play like that. Had we had anyone in the system with that skill set that wasn't replacement level or bottom six ceiling (i.e. Grenier, Gaunce, Lebate, etc.) Benning probably picks a higher skill guy like Ehlers. At the time, we lacked physicality and goal scoring in our system and lineup, hence why he picked JV then and Boeser a year later. Boeser in a redraft probably goes top 3 based upon what he's done in college so far.
Again, seeing as Ehlers isn't a 200 foot player it's unlikely that WD would have trusted him enough to give him the big minutes that he gets in Winnipeg, not to mention he wouldn't be shielded by having Laine ahead of him.
Meaning they have multiple picks in every round of the draft like we should have done
we've had two 2nd round draft picks in 8 years. - classic321
Its disappointing but hopefully Benning is done with burning draft picks on players because he should realize by now the Canucks aren't a very good team and they're only going to get worse in the near future.
Going forward I hope they try and grab a few more picks and the majority of their first rounders pan out.

How about they just shut the forums down then? What's to discuss if you don't discuss what's happening with the Canucks and around the league? - LeftCoaster
You whine about how bad our team is at (drafting/rebuild strategy/this player vs our player/) as compared to other bad/mediocre teams in the league. It gets tiresome, some of your points I happen to agree with, others I think you're way out there, but there are some days I wonder if you really are a fan of the team or not. Take my opinion for whatever it's worth.

That's what forums are for, to voice your opinion lol.
I think I'm fair in my assessment of Benning, he's drafted a few nice players, and I've said as much. Virtanen is turning into a project but there's still lots of time for him. His trades have been less than stellar however.
If I had to pick out my biggest female dog it's that they fail to recognize when they arrived that the team needed to be rebuilt through the draft, something they're just now outwardly saying they need to do.
If it's getting tiresome for you I suggest you either ignore it, or go somewhere where everyone thinks things are ok.
the entire point of the conversation just flies over your head! I'm not talking about right now in the sense that they're only a 55 point team. I'm talking about where they were before 2012, about where they are now and where they're headed in the future.
You can't see the forest for the trees sometimes - LeftCoaster

They did/ are rebuilding through the draft you just didn't get your tear down that you want. McCann, Virt, OJ, Gaudette, Tree, Boeser and Demko. Probably two more years of high picks. You need some patience

If we had a power forward already that was being developed in the system, then I would have agreed with picking Ehlers. The problem was that we had no one willing to take the body or go to the net and our team (at the time) were all perimeter players unwilling to go to the dirty areas.
You have to stop looking at other teams picks and projecting that they would have had the same success here, it's not as simple as that. There's no guarantee that Ehlers would be able to score as much as he has here with who we would surround him with. We play a style similar to the dead puck era Lemaire NJ and Minny teams where we rely on defense and goaltending and try to play opportunistic in the offensive zone. That's not condusive to have high skill guys getting points/goals, and it's not like WD would have trusted Ehlers with big minutes seeing as he's not a 200 foot player. - DariusKnight
Logic and common sense in a Canuck thread. I don't know if this post will be tolerated. Hysteria and caustic rhetoric is the acceptable practice.

Drawing comparisons & bouncing ideas & banter is what we do here

What are you basing this on? Not drafting well for years? So the recent drafting isn't enough. Why do you think he made the trades for younger players to fill in the development gap. Again, is drafting the ONLY tool to building? With that said don't take away the recognition that quality drafting is highly important.

JB was very clear & upfront at the start.
Stating drafting developing trading & UFAS were all needed going forward.

People seem to have forgotten what his plan was. He has stuck to what he said he was going to do.
Drafting is key and fill in players by trade and free-agency all teams attempt this but only 1 team prevails on a yearly basis.
A couple solid drafts will get us well on our way.

There you go. Well said. Adding to this train of thought here. That pretty well sums up tank nation female doging. It's not a rebuild unless there is a complete tear down all at once. The Leaf model. Okay well they got lucky on a forward or two doesn't mean they are on their way.
Also, Nucks have moved several players the last couple seasons. Where now we are talking about moving Edler, Tanev, Hansen and the Twins. A concept so strange only a couple years back. So it's been torn down quite a bunch. Getting in the new blood from drafting and developing takes time. The other avenues for rebuilding has produced some progress that we are seeing in the likes of Sven, Granlund, Sutter and Stecher. Guddy to follow next season after recovery.

Yes he did & is still candid about his approach as we go

yeah, some posters on here are pretty depressing with their, 'realism'...
why wouldn't the Nux get better next season when they have young guys who's game is only going to be that much better next season, Horvat, Tree, Stecher, Hutton, Baertschi, Megna, Chaput and probably some other rookie who ends up cracking the squad or a guy like JV who needs seasoning in the AHL before making the jump.
