You're just blinded by hatred. They're a lot better this year. Sure they've got a long way to go but they're definitely trending up. See if they can sustain it. - LeftCoaster
Not blinded at all I just think it is ridiculous to be gaga over a mediocre team |

I don't either I think now that he is 16 years old it looks cute. When he hits 25 he is going to look like the dirty old man of the Munchkins LolliPop Gang - VANTEL

No...you're blinded by hate. They used the draft to get better, that's all I'm professing. You don't go from last place to a 100+ point team in one or two seasons. |

You are drooling over a team that will wake up tomorrow tied with the Flames in 16 th spot . It is your nickle if you want to go high praise on them ,and shoot down the Canucks who are three points behind, then have a good time . |

God I hate defending the Leafs but I'll call a spade a spade, they're where they are from decent drafting over the course of the last eight drafts. Kadri was taken in 2009, Rielly & Brown in 2012, Nylander in 2014, Marner in 2015 and of course Matthews in 2016. Only Matthews was a first overall pick, which was luck.
That 6 players just from drafting. I hate when people call it the Leafs model, like they're the first ones in NHL history to use the draft to get better....like WTF??? Teams have used the draft since its inception to win Championships. - LeftCoaster
Actually drafting is not the Leaf's model that was referred to but it's your crusade.
As to your defending team building. I don't know why you have to keep saying the same thing. No one denies quality drafting is important and needed. It's a core tool to building a team. Recognize any others? |

the entire point of the conversation just flies over your head! I'm not talking about right now in the sense that they're only a 55 point team. I'm talking about where they were before 2012, about where they are now and where they're headed in the future.

Oh I wanted him, he was my pick, I told Nucker (who was screaming Ehlers) we needed what Jake brought. BUT....after I've seen him play a lot more, that was a 6th overall pick, I was probably wrong.
Jake just doesn't think the game well, that doesn't mean he won't be a useful player, there's still a lot of time to develop him but for a pick that high they should be going with a higher ceiling player. - LeftCoaster
If we had a power forward already that was being developed in the system, then I would have agreed with picking Ehlers. The problem was that we had no one willing to take the body or go to the net and our team (at the time) were all perimeter players unwilling to go to the dirty areas.
You have to stop looking at other teams picks and projecting that they would have had the same success here, it's not as simple as that. There's no guarantee that Ehlers would be able to score as much as he has here with who we would surround him with. We play a style similar to the dead puck era Lemaire NJ and Minny teams where we rely on defense and goaltending and try to play opportunistic in the offensive zone. That's not condusive to have high skill guys getting points/goals, and it's not like WD would have trusted Ehlers with big minutes seeing as he's not a 200 foot player. |

If you need a body checker you don't use a 6th overall pick to get him, it's the combination of scoring and being a heavy forechecker was why he was picked there.
Your scenario is as subjective as mine, Ehlers may very well have blossomed with all the injuries last year. We'll never know. |

Playoff performances is the acid test.
Scoring & space goes down & thats the where it matters.
Wait til then & lets pass judgement.

Here's a novel idea, how about we don't worry about the Leafs and see where they are in 4 years which is when Shanahan says they'll be ready to compete.
How about we also stop caring about the Flames because they aren't that much better than us and are only about a year or two ahead of us in their rebuild.
How about we stop worrying about other teams picks that are doing better than ours seeing as it's impossible to say whether or not they'd have the success they had on our team as it's constructed and the style of hockey we play.
Might be nice not to have the Canucks HB blog forums be pages upon pages of posters slaming or defending this team's rebuild strategy vs that team's strategy or whining about this player being more successful then that player and just play with the hand that's been dealt. |

If for a minute we ignore our scoring ability & project what our D corps is capable of in the PO's i'd say we r going about it the right way. D wins & scoring only makes it a lil bit easier come the PO's. Total team play gets it done in the end. |

How about they just shut the forums down then? What's to discuss if you don't discuss what's happening with the Canucks and around the league? |
