We'll see but vet teams usely get better this time or year, and it's not the kids or Anderson that's the problem! Defense is ! - MR.Hunter
Defense has always been the issue.
Its only 1 game so far.
they need rielly back and better depth d - which could be had for cheap. |

True..but Kadri is not at that rats level.
Kadri's antics and dives use to piss me off too....but he has cleaned that up.
Good to see. - Fakepartofme
I agree just saying others would (Vancouver ) |

Great defending on that first goal by Gardiner I see! - MaximusAurelius[but he's sooo good at moving the puck ]
Need to trade Willie to get some decent D.
Not trading willie.
I know you only say that to get people going.
But as I posted above....once Rielly is back and f'n makes some trades for depth D....the back end will be better.
No big trade will take place during the season.
Lets go Lou! |

the next year or two is the best time to make a run in the playoffs.
So many cheap stars....nows the time to maybe overpay some quality players on short term deals...without sacrificing the future. - Fakepartofme
That's a plan, hopefully a free agent or two that's won a cup and can teach the kids the work that is needed for success |

Would be nice to see some new faces on D.
Rielly/Z/Gardiner can stay
The rest I couldn't care if they worked at Mac's Milk for the rest of their days. - Garnie
Good news is they can't really be worse.... |

I actually think it's a good move for the Leafs to make.
Nylander is not very effective; bit of a floater.
Great shot, some nice speed, but bad decision making and there will always be a lack of defensive capabilities.
He's a great top6 scorer, but I guess he's just not my type of player..
(I do realise his upsides, and the fact that he's still a young player with room for improvement, but I just don't believe he'll be a difference maker). |

I wouldn't be upset if Justin Williams came cheap in free agency. I think his contract is up this year... |

Don't need him to be a difference maker really. We have a few of those in Matthews, Marner, Andersen. He needs to be a Patrick Sharp/Hossa esque just a younger version.
I suppose a better comparison is a young Bobby Ryan. |

For this season? They'd likely have to give up a 3rd round pick in compensation or something... which I still don't understand - TheMussel
no not anymore.
the blues just need to give permission to the other team to talk to Hitch. |

Hossa is definitely in the category of difference makers (at least in my book).
My worry is that Nylander will pan out to be a lesser version of Phil Kessel.
i guess people will say Penguins won a cup with Crosby and Malkin (so Matthews and Marner as difference makers) and a sub-par defense; Kessel (Nylander to leafs) being an important piece to that cup last year.
If that'll happen, I would be happy of course, but not sure Nylander will get to Kessel level ever.

Hossa isn't relied on the way Kane and Toews is though. He's a great winger but he isn't their go-to guy. He might have been in the first or even the second cup run but he doesn't make the team go. |

What was Gard's doing at the end of 1....that may be the longest breakaway I've ever seen in the NHL.
He just gave up....threw it towards his own goalie. |
