Or we could just remove that from the players we don't like! - MJL
Clearly we're doing that already. I'm just trying to level the playing field. lol |

What narrative was that exactly? I was making the point that he is 2 shots away from his shooting percentage being in line with what it was his first year as a Flyer. In fact, taking his empty netter out as well puts him at his career average shooting percentage.
To make you feel better, if he scores a hat trick tonight with each shot of his resulting in a goal going off of his skates, his shooting percentage will be 28%. Is that okay, or am I fitting a narrative?
The entire point of the analysis was to look at his 5 goals and put a reasonable amount of thought into whether or not it was sustainable. - YuenglingJagr
I know his current pace isn't sustainable and it's not like we expect it to stay there. But to keep bashing him when he's playing well is just... well typical Philly sports fan.
He's nothing special but he's also not the anchor most people make him out to be. He's your typical NHL checking/energy line role player. Goes out there busts his ass and goes for a change. Every team has those guys.

Using his production to say he is playing well is the exact misconception I am referring to. Goals scored can mask poor play, just as much as not scoring goals get labeled as struggling.
I am analyzing the games and seeing that the Flyers are winning games in spite of his play, not because of it. You're welcome to feel otherwise, I just think it is funny there is really no way for the "non-haters" to show his value other than pointing to unsustainable goal production.
Even his production is laughable compared to what he gives up. His GF% (a hot topic the other day) is tied for 17-22 WORST IN THE NHL among players with similar TOI as him. He is a top line player on the all garbage team. |

I just did a quick look down the list of people below him currently in GF% (more than 10 games and all situations) and two names stick out to me. Martin Hanzal, who some people (not saying it was you) want the Flyers to persue as a FA and Ryan White who people have said would have been better to keep than VDV,
Also in that group are Patrick Sharp, Matt Beleskey and Michael Boedker...
So let's not say it's the all garbage team. (Disclaimer: I am glad White is gone) |

GF% is a badly flawed stat. His +/- clearly shows that he is not a liability defensively. I think it's funny that stats proponents think that the only way you can look at a players value, is by looking at team stats. Any objective fan can see the value that Vandevelde brings to the team, and why he continues to play. If you can't see the positives along with the negatives, then you have a biased view that lacks objectivity. That's how you form an opinion that "he sucks".
This is your logic. His production rate of 5 goals is unsustainable in the future, so therefore, the 5 goals he has scored to this point, have no value, and the player should not be given credit for it.
If we want to look at some stats. I can provide some team stats masquerading as individual stats, in Vandevelde's favor. |

Empty reply. The SP% (substance percentage) of this post is 0%.
I'll cut you off at the pass. Yes, +/- is a team stat, and also has flaws. |
