My first job in 1980 was cooking at a KFC. The owner was NEVER there.

My buddy used to work across the street at Star Market.

Everytime we both worked on a Friday night, he would pinch a twelver from the stock room, and ride his bike over to the chicken store. I would fry up 50 wings for the two of us and we'd just sit in the kitchen dranking beer and chowing wings.

Then we'd get on our bikes and pedal home. Oh, the old days...

If I was working in that job today, in the same conditions, I would have tens of thousands of dollars in worker's comp payments. The working conditions were deplorable - mostly because the guy who owned it left the management of the place to 16 and 17 year old kids all night long, and to a lady named LaRae who ran the place and kept the books during the day.

All the asswipe did was show up once a week to collect the money.

Restaurants are still bad places to work. I can only imagine what they were like in the 50's

I used to work at a place where the owner would just sit upstairs in his office and watch the cute high school girls on the cameras(they spent a lot of money on cameras, this was before it was really a thing to put cameras up and they were color and 30fps) who made the pizzas and probably only had one hand on the keyboard. Somewhat interestingly the cameras were only pointed at the pizza station and not on us trolls in the back of the kitchen with the fryers and sub station.

Edit: I missed the 1980 part, damn.
