Prying away a 1C in a trade requires top end assets. Do the Canucks 1 have any or 2 can afford to trade them away creating other holes? Besides don't see any out there Boston already has sent 2 away last decade in Thornton & Seguin. Again at a time Canucks didn't have the package of assets to get them.
It's the draft gamble more likely or luck out with a Free agent from another league for the 1C. Otherwise work and develop what you have in Bo. A high draft pick that cost us a "Carry Price type" of asset. Notice the value exchanges ... do Canucks have that now? - Nuck4U
Agreed.

He could maybe get a 1st rounder if it was from a team that expected to have a shot at the cup. 25-30 range. He's really not worth anything higher. - NorthNuck
YEah that would be about right.... his cap hit would be biggest leverage for those cap tight Cup contenders |

Isn't the rebuild marker being able to make the playoffs with the new young core and then build up with vets to be a contender at expense of youth and future...?
Why any moves to the contrary are scrutinized by the rebuild purists - Nuck4U
So if you're a team like Edmonton that has a poopload of prospects and are light on D do you really want another 1st round pick that will take 3-4 years to mature or a guy that's ready to step in an play like Tanev. |

IMO edm would trade a first for tanev in a heartbeat |

Not necessarily, the two franchises are fundamentally polar opposites with regards to the 'window of competitiveness'.
They are arching up where-as we have fallen out the 43rd window and are currently waiting to hit the dry concrete below.
Sending vets over to the likes of young up and coming teams (CLB, FL, COL, WIN, ARZ, BUF etc) is exactly what we should be doing.
Screw the Kane's of the league, Benning really ought to be pursuing the Nylander's + 1st rounders - Whiskey-Tango

I can't think of one team that didn't go the trade or UFA route to add to a young core to reach that next step.
EDM did it this summer as did MTL to a certain extent, Winnipeg with Myers+Stafford, NYI did it a few seasons back with Leddy and Boychuk, hell, look at all the movement Florida pulled to insulate that young core etc etc etc.
Thing is, you need a developed youthful core first, which we don't really have atm. |

Would be interesting to find out what van is offering and what the Sabres are asking - Redmile247

There was no first rounder given up. If you like the pick ups then you should know they are also players that will be relevant for years. The two sent away. Well one may be just a career AHLer. The other not a top 6 forward where you get in return a young vet top 4RD in return that has lots of value. - Nuck4U
So you have the final say on how Shinkaruk and McCann will develop? Both of them haven't even started their careers yet. The players we picked up I like because of their potential, just the same as I like Shinkaruk and McCann's potential to be NHL players. The point of the post was that we should be trying to keep as many young talented players and give them the chance to prove what kind of players they will be rather than watch them develop with other teams. |

I wasn't thinking for my team ...although after the 6 game road trip who knows where they will be
Kane to van would have made a bit of sense in the summer ...now if it happens this thread will be locked |

A Kane trade screams Aquilini. Benning is all about character and leadership. I just can't see him being interested at all. - CanuckDon

I don't see why Hansen can't get a 1st. He's an elite 3rd line player, that can slide up the lineup.
It's not like that 1st round pick is any better than 25th overall. - golfingsince

nah. Tanev > RNH
Hansen improves their D and PK tremendously...and could actually skate with Conner.
Garteig fills another hole and is icing on top.
It's a package deal. Edm deals from a position of strength, and fills holes and adds depth. |
