Gonna post a long one... sorry in advance

Over the last few years, we've talked a lot about the best way to build a championship team, and many people now are convinced that tanking and getting the first overall pick is required to win a cup because Chicago and Pittsburgh did it that way. I would argue that they are the exceptions... Since the NHL expanded to 30 teams in 2000, Chicago and Pittsburgh are the only two teams that have picked first overall and then gone on to win the Stanley Cup.

If we expand that and look at number of top 5 picks since 2000, we get the following list:
Florida: 7 times
Islanders: 7 times
Atlanta/Winnipeg: 6 times
Columbus: 6 times
Edmonton: 6 times
Carolina: 5 times
Pittsburgh: 5 times
Toronto: 4 times
Tampa: 4 times
Buffalo: 3 times
Arizona: 3 times
Colorado: 3 times
Los Angeles: 3 times (never first overall)
Chicago: 3 times
Washington: 3 times
Boston: 2 times (once because of Toronto...)
St. Louis: 2 times
Philadelphia: 2 times
Anaheim: 2 times
Minnesota: 2 times
Vancouver, Calgary, Nashville, Montreal, New Jersey (because they won the lottery), and Ottawa each only have 1 top-5 selection since 2000.

The Rangers, Detroit, San Jose, and Dallas have never picked in the top-5 since the NHL has been a 30 team league.

All this to say that while getting top draft picks obviously can help, relying on sucking for multiple seasons to stock up on top-5 draft picks is NOT a sure fire way to win a cup or even be a cup contender. More often that not, you end up like Florida or the Islanders who are still trying to put things together despite years of futility.

Wrong. Many people knew they were crap but we couldn't be heard over the loud flapping sounds coming from the circle jerk gang.

For the record, most lemmings thought the Canucks were an average team. Likely to finish around 20th place. I still believe that happens. I don't remember anyone saying they were a good team

People were saying playoffs, even 20th place compared to where they will finish 28-30th, is so far off. You clearly don't watch or understand hockey.

See this here is why I think you are a wiener .

1) First off when we were in there telling you your team sucked , ours was playing for the cup.

2) Just because you say lets move on doesn't mean I am moving on. Only an idiot comes in here telling us how bad we are when their team has less wins and is just as bad as ours.

3) You thinking the high picks has helped your team substantially when they are sitting at 3 wins and 7 losses supports my comment about being an idiot that I called you in point number two.

Nothing personal

Can't believe WD has continued to use Tanev on the 2nd PP unit. Give Hutton some help jeez.

I had a dream.... about what may be....

Canucks trade Tanev in a package (to Canes?) and also get a first round pick back that turned into a lotto pick. They win the lotto with that draft pick and get Patrick. They make playoffs too by sending their 1st rounder plus Granlund and Subban for E. Kane a skating scoring power forward.

Next season Patrick turns out to be just as NHL ready as Mathews. Patric plays with BB and LE on a line. Twins still have Hanson. Bo elevates Baer and JV. Sutter meshes with E.Kane and Rodin. Stecher, Tree & OJ play on D with Sbisa taken in expansion draft.

Canucks have 4 Lines that can score and play a faster and more skilled with a better, tougher and skilled D. They are now considered a Cup contender and win it for the twins as other top teams suffer key injuries.

Dreams may they come true and turn the tide of despair .... In the meantime patience and luck is our hope

Just watching reality can be frustrating ... snake bitten low scoring team ...oh well.

I call bullpoop. You lemmings were all playoffs and bubble team. Don't try to back off now that you've all walked off the cliff.

This trading to make this team better now has got to stop. We're 4 or 5 players away from being competitive. Give it a year. Let Hutton/Bo/JV grow. Let Boeser make the lineup, another high draft pick. Then Maybe, just maybe, we can be that playoff/bubble team. JV has got to show more progress though, he's been invisible most nights.

If you can't score you can't win no matter how much effort or how competitive they seem. They played good hockey tonight but still can't score. Goals equal wins. Defence has improved so has transition. Goals have decreased.

I feel if this continues WD and the rest of the coaching staff will pay the price. Even though they aren't the ones not scoring.

I am calling bullpoop on the trading.

Yes Tanev is a nice Dman that can munch minutes. He is not going to bring scoring . He wont move players from out in front of the net. He will never intimidate.

He is a minute muncher that plays smart angles to defend. If the teams plan is always to chase then he is perfect.

If you can move him like Jersey did you absolutely do it.

We have a lot of Mason Raymonds on this team and Canucks should be looking to make moves to upgrade always

I said trades to make this a playoff team. If Tanev gets moved for a young forward that can score (landeskog) I'm all for it. That won't get this team into the playoffs. Well still be multiple players off, our defense will be a lot worse without our best defender on the left. Are we going to move Hutton up the lineup into his spot

Virtanen played 4:13 thru two periods, team needs goals, he was a scorer in junior, why not give him a chance...I don't get the coach or the GM
- LeftCoaster

Probably because he lacks talent, and doesn't deserve it. Those first two goals were on Hutton, overrated.

I'm gonna squash your comment right off the bat, because, I've not heard one person say we absolutely need a 1st overall pick or we're doomed. I have however heard we need a few top five picks when there's a player available that can be a difference maker.

You don't need to be the worst team in the league to draft well, however, the best players tend to come from the top of the first round, that's not even debatable!
