It's a lousy comparison, and it's really built on the tired narrative that Holmgren sucked as a GM, and the deal was against Hextall's wishes. I think the input of subordinates is more of a factor than many want to admit. It's also possible that Hextall was the driving force behind the entire deal. We don't know.

Two different GMs had two different strategies. I wish I could take a little bit from one and a little bit of the other and mash these bits together. The youth movement started with Holmgren and Holmgren was left to retool almost the day he accepted the job. The Flyers were in much better shape from a talent standpoint from when Holmgren took over for Clarke and Holmgren made it work in less than a year. With Hextall he had the talent but the money spending standpoint had become an issue. With Hextall it's a matter of vision. I don't think Hextall completely respected the talent or you don't trade a legitimate front line winger for an overpriced third line player regardless of length in salary. Holmgren was aggressive which is what I liked and did a decent job of keeping the flyers competitive. My only issue with Homer is maybe he was too aggressively. He got his way most of the time.
