IMO the talent chosen over the past 10+ years seems to be more consistant with meeting expectations.
Alexander Ovechkin
Sidney Crosby
Patrick Kane
Steven Stamkos
John Tavares
Taylor Hall
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Nathan MacKinnon
Aaron Ekblad
Connor McDavid
Auston Matthews
Busts are becoming less regular. Kids are more prepared to enter the NHL right away. Scouting process has become more scientific. I just think landing a young superstar is much more likely these days. - bloatedmosquito
Only 2 of those ten have won a cup. . Th bottom 6 probably will never win . |

Spot on!!!!!!! Sometimes smart drafting works out better than tanking! Only reason tanking will work for the Oilers now is cuz they got McJesus. Wasn't working too well before him.
Anyways, lets start the parade on Burrard st, then head to robson...... - bigpetar
Yeah I have said it before and ill say it again...we should be the example of what NOT to do as far as a rebuild goes.....also its still surprising that people are thinking drafting high means your team will be a success...last I checked hockey was a TEAM sport so unless you can place a good team around said player that team will suck

I think I left off one or two. But it's the percentage you have to play. And the percentages fall in the favour of high draft picks. - bloatedmosquito
Drafting is the single most important thing a franchise can do, anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. Simply put, it sets the foundation for the trades and UFA signings that follow in order to push your team into the Championship level.
But it's all about making the right selection! Of course there's an element of luck involved, a generational player being there when you pick I mean, or, not picking a kid like Erik Johnson first overall when Johnathan Toews is there for the taking. Blues could have had themselves a franchise center right there.
Not an exact science I know, but those kinds of things really set you back. They did make a nice recovery in trading him and getting Shattenkirk back though. |

I dont know if you are serious or not but if we are going to say that 5 games is the measuring stick then we can say at this point that Lucic > Hall |

What?
I thought we have been talking about competing for a cup? Building a team that will be able to truly challenge for the cup. I just don’t want my team to show up. I want them to win the damn thing.
Those players listed above are or will be difference makers. And at the very minimum they have rejuvenated their franchises and provided a solid foundation for management to build upon. Created excitement and optimism for the fan base.
How can you argue against having the 1st overall pick? You make it sound like it's dirty. |

I think the kid's got loads of talent. But he is a young punk and young punks want to score and win. He's going to flourish on the Blues. They have the system and players to allow kids like Yak to do their thing.
They will show patience with him and over time teach him how to be more defensively responsible. The Blues call that player development. The Oilers call it magic. |

Oilers - VANTEL
you're such a meathead, the Oilers are a prime example of how drafting wins you Stanley Cups, they drafted all their HHOF players from their dynasty except Wayne Gretzky.
Messier, Coffey, Kurri, Fuhr, Anderson...any of those guys ring a bell? Incompetent management doesn't negate the fact drafting is the most important thing a franchise can do.
I love how there's one example of incompetence and somehow it's passed off as the norm??? |

Thank you captain obvious. Good to have you aboard.
Again, it's about increasing your chances/odds. Would you go to Vegas and bet money on games that give you the best odds in winning or the worst odds to win?

I disagree, you just have to draft well and bring in quality players. Edler, as an example, is a solid pick for a third rounder. Bieksa was a solid pick for a fifth rounder, neither are home runs but rather just good contributing members of good teams.
You need to hit a home run when you draft top three or five. |

Yeah I can see as an outsider how you think this but reality is Yak was given a ton of chances to succeed...he got to play with McDavid....if that isnt giving a guy a chance to flourish then I dunno wtf is...he dropped the ball plain and simple and Ebs did much better in that position....he played with Nuge and Hall and same results....maybe he will turn out to be a good player but im not ready to crown him as such after only 5 games...lets revisit this after game 41

I'd say Bieksa in the 5th is a homerun.
Datsyuk is a series sweep. |

Speaking of draft picks, i wonder what the future holds for Olli Juolevi. Sucks to see Mikhail Sergachev and Jakob Chychrun playing already. Chychrun got his first last night too. I think in the long run Olli will probably become our elite dman we've been missing |

Yes, we all see that. Missing the point. Is it easier to build around a young superstar, bring together a supporting cast that works off his strengths?
Or do you build a supporting cast first and then hope to find a star that fits in with the roster you have built?
1st line centre, defensive forward, offensive dman, goalie. You need to have stars in those positions to be a cup contender. Drafting high is a good way to start building that core.
