Of the D, he certainly has a good argument as having the worst night, but he was still out there at the end defending a 2 goal lead with the Kings basically having a 5 on 4 PP. And, really outside of a couple noticeable issues, I thought MacDonald was solid. He looked really good one the PKs, too.
Perhaps Manning slides ahead of somebody if he can sustain his play from last night. He was very active and effective. Provorov was excellent after having some first game jitters/hiccups in the opening period. Still it's nice to have the depth. - Jsaquella
Yup, they all played well. And yes indeed, it is very nice to finally have some legit depth at D.

I thought the consensus was mdz to in fact be a top pair guy. - JoeRussomanno
I think you're confusing the point that Del Zotto is probably the top defenseman on the team currently, rather than Del Zotto being in fact a top pair guy. In the big picture, I see Del Zotto as a 2nd pair defenseman, who could play on a top pair in support of a true top #1 defenseman.

My dream is that by 18-19, we see something like:
Provorov-MDZ
Morin-Ghost
Sanheim-Myers

That would be great. Del Zotto would be a veteran. By that time, Provorov will have 2 seasons under his belt, and Gostisbehere would be in his 5th season. I fully expect Morin to be a full time Flyers next season. We'll see about Sanheim and Myers.

Kind of weird that 18-19 lineup has MDZ on the right and doesn't include the RHD who is actually under contract.

I think Ghost will get six years at $5.5m starting 17-18.
Morin will get a much cheaper bridge deal starting 18-19.
Provy and Sanheim are still too far away to even worry about. |

What a 1st round 2015 could turn out to be. Nice to get some speed and skill on the wing in Konecny and Provorov could turn out to be Timonen. Does all the things that don't show up in the score sheet really well while he will add some offense .
Only slight negative was G being quiet, but Kopitar will do that to almost everyone he goes against. |

I don't think it was posted to illustrate exact pairings or who would play on what side, but more to show the 6 players who might make up the teams top 6 defensive core.

I wouldn't spend too many cycles worrying about G. He'll be fine.
The 2nd line making teams pay for loading up on Giroux should be fun to watch. |

It's a grand slam of a draft already. Konecny has a super high skill level. The No look passes are fantastic |

So assuming everyone at least meets expectations, are we happy with a top 6 of
Schenn - G - Simmonds
Konecny - Coots - Jake
for the next few years?
If so, Hextall might not ever have to make that big trade and we can just keep developing all of our prospects and fill in the rest of the team that way. Or do we want to improve the top 6 still? I worry slightly about G and Simmonds being a little older when the D prospects are entering their prime, and all the young salaries would open up a lot of cap space to be able to make a big move. But if that top 6 does what we expect, that should be a lot of goals over the next few years.
Either way, even though it's only one game, it's great to see that Hextall will have a lot of options moving forward. |

Even better if he took a couple. PP2 looks like they are gonna move the puck around and get some really good looks
Man, there's a lot to be excited about with the team. Darryl Sutter looked shell-shocked for a couple of minutes last night

That's the only thing that nags at me about this team. Size isn't as big of a deal as it used to be, but it's hard to get used to seeing teams outmuscle them down low, on the wall
The league's changed, but I wouldn't mind a guy like Dwight King on the Flyers, that's for sure |

Agreed, and I think over the next year or so, you'll see a guy like Matt Read replaced with a bigger, faster player. |

Really telling that hakstol has chosen streit as Provorov defense partner. Streit really has been under valued as a flyer. It says a lot about him as a team player.
It would not surprise me to see him return next year on a 1 year deal with a significantly less cap hit. I just don't see all the kids coming up without a vet being a 3rd pairing guy. I don't see hexy paying MDZ more per year then streit s cap hit right now. Another reason I can see him resigned. Of course, streit has to show durability this year. |

He's the closest they have right now, but, on a top team, he's a 2nd pair guy. - BiggE
And more of an ideal #4 at that on a Cup-caliber blueline. |
