dont see why theres all the JB hate. Yes some contracts were overly big, yes some trades were marginally questionable and maybe even some lost. BUT he's the best drafter we've prob ever had. You dont fire that. And he works very hard at scouting at multiple levels.

Best drafter we've had hey? We took Virtanen and Juolevi and both picks were scrutinized by most in hockey, he's drafted in a great spot and still was second guessed. His great free agent pick ups were 1) Ryan Miller 2) Radim Vrbata 3) Loui Eriksson, all 3 he had to overpay for in a situation where we didn't need older players. Great contracts extended by Benning 1) Brandon Sutter 5 years @ 4.35m 2) Derek Dorsett 4 years 2.65m because you need to pay fourth line players to play 11 mpg and not score 3) Lucas Sbisa 3 years @ 3.6m. Great trades by the Trader 1) Ryan Kesler for the great Sbisa, Bonino and Jarred McCann 2) Eddie Lack for a #3 and #7 draft pick when we could have kept him for 1/3 of the cost of Miller 3) Bonino and a #2 for Brandon Sutter, another move that doesn't really make us better but gives away draft picks and increases our payroll, especially when Bonino outscored Sutter the last two years. 4) McCann and a #2 for Gundbrandson, this trade I think we needed but I don't agree with giving up a young promising player and another 2nd rounder. We come into this year with a below average non playoff team and go and sign Eriksson so that we're just good enough to not make the playoffs and not have good drafting position, it seems like management isn't sure of the direction of this team. It would be good to commit to a rebuild and go like Edmonton, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh and Chicago and be a bottom feeder for 2-3 years and get top 5 picks to build a foundation for the future.

Well have brought this up in the last three threads. Especially the fact he's had since end of preseason Horvat playing a 4th line cheking role with Burr. But he had Granlund with Sutter. WD is more obsessed about who he has as the fourth line center then generating scoring lines.

Seems WD doesn't think Sutter is burly enough to take on big centers in a checking role. He sees him as a shooter and has been consistently scoring. So he gets PP1 minutes too. Horvatt isn't pressed for offense and is left to play like in his rookie year.

With Rodin out WD is like shying away from an a skill line. Well except for twins but he thinks with LE they are two way enough anyway.

The "second" line with Baertchi will have a lot of pressure on it now. Granlund and JV haven't proven their scoring and Baer just is getting started. So a Sutter or Horvat with some proven NHL scoring should be a better center, right?

The Sutter line with Hanson and Gaunce just looks like more of a grinding line like Horvatt with Burr & DD. There is potential for popping a goal or having a counter but they won't be generating any offensive skill.

Conclusion, seems like WD wants to slow the game down and play a grinding defensive first style to limit goals and hope that one or two goals are enough to win a game.

Everytime the canucks do something that breaks the mould of the 1970s you lose your shiit.

But Max, the first line is supposed to be our best line and the fourth line is supposed to be our goon line.. How am i supposed to establish a hierarchy if we dont have concrete line combinations. Coaches never mix their lines mid-game and the team is really just a bunch of individuals all trying to score goals every shift. There are no more dynamics in the game than that and I don't want to wear some 4th liners jersey.

I didn't say he wasn't good at drafting, I said his picks have been second guessed by most hockey experts. I really like the picks he's made, the trades, contracts, roster moves and public comments he's made have been questionable though.
