Of course they can be. But before crucifying a guy for something, it's better to look into the data and see if it supports your opinion.
http://www.sportingcharts...giveaways-statistic/2015/
Gards had 74 giveaways in 79 games. Not great for sure, but less than one giveaway a game is hardly unsurmountable. Especially when you see that guys with more giveaways per game include Subban, Brodie, Burns, Doughty, Muzzin, Big Buff, Seabrook, Klingberg and Letang. - lumlums
Guys with the puck a lot tend to give it away more. |

That's why his team mates stand in front of the net.. So, they won't get hit by a letter high clapper. - bixll
So true, I remember when Phaneuf broke Lupul's arm....he was standing wide left side of the net. |

That was the worst... wide wide left.
I heard that's how they convinced JVR to be the front of the net guy on the PP. |

It's not the amount, it's the quality of the giveways that directly leads to a goal. Plus those players play against the best players, you cannot compare, again it goes to my problem with the stats. |

He has a career high of 19 points and he makes more than 2m/yr. It looks like he gets enough credit to me. - 1979AD

I look beyond just the stats, like the blatant giveways, bonehead passes, bad positioning, terrible pinches, things that are not measured by subjective stats. - LeafMan
You still didn't answer my question, who do you think is a quality D man ???

On the Leafs?
Right now only Rielly, jury is still out on Zaitsev. I like Carrick, Neilson and Dermott coming though. |

I think Gards made terrible plays when he first came into the league and its kind of stuck with him. Last season was his best season, does he still make mistakes - yep but he has improved. His skating creates time/space on the ice, probably why the stats indicate he is good at getting the puck out of the zone. As a 3/4 Gards is just fine, and given the cost of today's D really nothing to fuss over.

remember when kadri was 3C - he was vs lower level D pairings, and he was great.
marner should do even better, if thats the case, considering how good lines 1 and 2 SHOULD be. - Lucas.Neilson
Will also help Bozak on the third line as well, should be able to bang home some of those nice saucers from Marner. |
