agreed

he does need to turn that corner this year though

- homiedclown

No doubt. My hope is that giving him a little less ice time will allow him to do that to be quite honest. I still think he should lead the team in ice time, so dropping his time by 2 or 3 mins should keep him there so long as they don't only play the 3rd pair 10-12 mins a game.

You're right, Duncan Keith wasn't playing 25 minutes a night when Chicago won their cups.

Drew Doughty hadn't been playing 26-28 minutes a night when LA won.

Zdeno Chara didn't play that much when Boston won

Lidstrom didn't play over 26 minutes a night when Detroit won

and same with Letang

Oh, wait...

- JCSabs06

I grant you all of this is accurate.

I probably should have said somebody so young. Those guys were all far more experienced by the time they reached the cup years.

Yea, I was just feeling Richardish. It's been some time since I posted so I figured I should make a bit of a splash.

You do have a point with age/maturity/skill. Although, hopefully someday he will be there.

I do agree that it wouldn't hurt him to have a few less minutes.

Actually, Doughty is the outlier there. He was 22 in 2012 when he won his first Cup. It was his 4th full NHL season. He averaged 24:54 mins/game.

But looking back at the past 8-10 Stanley Cup Champions, they all seem to have that guy that is logging at least an avg. of 25 minutes a night.

So to say good teams don't rely on 1 player to play that much might be true. But great teams do.

When Anaheim won Neidermeyer and Pronger were logging 27+

I think less minutes would help him to be able to take that next step. There's no saying he can't end up with more again at some point down the road, but giving him some extra time to rest and hone his skills a bit would help.

As would a partner that's not suited to be a 5/6 but is being asked to play 1/2 mins.

They are the same age, same draft class. So far, Trouba is much better.

I don't think we need Trouba, but I think we always should consider an upgrade on this blue line

- sbroads24

I'll take a quality top 4 defender at under $2M per for the next 3 seasons when the return is going to cost around $6M.

Not saying I am bargain shopping all the time, but I am this time.

from a possession/scoring perspective?

One or the other, or both. Risto is a very good offensive player, not a guy that drives the bus yet though

Well, thanks, but the fact that he was 22 doesn't change the fact that the had more experience than Risto, who is 21.

And Voynov, Scuderi, Martinez and Mitchell were a better crew around him than we have so far.

I agree with the second part of your response. But the first part doesn't make sense. Risto is 21, and will be 22 by the end of October. So he'll be the same age that Doughty was the 1st year he won the Cup. It was his 4th year in the league. This upcoming season will also be Risto's 4th, however his first year was short in that it was only 34 games. So he's about a half season behind Doughty in terms of actual NHL game experience at the same age. Not really super significant when you look at where Doughty was at that point and where Risto is now.

Honestly, I think this is the biggest part of the equation as far as him upping his game.

You learn from playing, you build endurance from playing. I think the extra minutes are negligible in terms of development and if anything if he can physically/mentally handle them then I think it is actually beneficial to have him on the ice.

Per Kings GM Dean Lombardi, Gaborik will be out eight weeks because of foot injury incurred at the World Cup.

Knowing Gaborik, he'd have ended up with some sort of injury during training camp anyway.

What I heard on the radio yesterday is that it got stepped on in the locker room, and the player that stepped on it has been released. I haven't looked to see who's been released recently, but it is a bit amusing.

With the way things happen around here, it wouldn't have surprised me if it was true. Though I'd hate to be the player that stepped on it either way.

This again? Most of the top 25 guys in the league in ATOI were 26 and older. Risto is only 21, and Trouba, the other is only 22(but was 21 for half the season). There's a few reasons why: they don't have the experience, they don't have the experience to know when to conserve energy, they're still growing into their bodies, trust of the coaches which goes with experience. All the guys you listed were older than Risto and Trouba. Hell, Keith, Chara, and Lidstrom were in their(late) 30's!
