I've tried a number of things. A lot of it never saw the light of day and the rest of it has been lost in the miasma of the internet. The primary concerns I found with my earliest attempts were a lack of equipment (I only have one mic and am missing a number of peripherals), a lack of content focus, and inconsistent co-hosts. My hosting had its flaws as well so I've been working on articulation and annunciation.

You do have a point though. A big part (maybe even the biggest part) of finding success is just doing it. My hope is that I can find some people in this program who I can work well with so I can get into a rhythm of producing content.

I guess there can be quality limitations given the equipment on hand that might put off part of the potential audience. But I think a lot of relatively popular Youtubers began with nothing more than their computer and a cheap microphone, if not the one on their computer.

One thing I imagine is incredibly difficult is the fragility between leveraging your social media influence (either on here or twitter or wherever) to promote yourself without resorting to the type of annoying self-promotion that ultimately diminishes that social media influence.

Likely due to a bias towards recent performances most notably that of Couture during the playoffs. I know, everyone will mention Hall's WC performance but I don't think that is deemed as impressive as Couture's playoff performance given the difference in quality of competition.

That's a BS excuse

That's right, too. Could just be a Babcock thing. Mike likes his players to not allow the opponent to create much and doesn't really care if they create a lot of offense themselves.

I think that's why Babcock always seems to hire innovative assistants.

Hall is a pretty damn good possession player.

Oh god yeah. That's the part I'm most worried about

I guess that's partly why I want to start off with a more established group and then transition into my own thing. Aside from the obvious benefits of learning from people who are already very familiar with the methods, getting a bit of carry-over audience would ease the process a fair deal. Self-promotion would still be necessary, but it becomes an easier process when you a.) are legitimized by a following and b.) have confidence that what you're making appeals to people.

In order to avoid that problem while still experimenting with new ideas you could start from scratch with an alias, say on twitter, so that you don't need to risk ruining your reputation if you go through some ups and downs at the start and so that you don't need to expose your true social media influence until you have a more polished/tested idea and a more experienced means of implementing it.

It's a lot of work but I imagine if you didn't enjoy messing with this kind of stuff you wouldn't be aiming towards this type of a career goal.

That's the big question, isn't it? I think my interests are varied enough that I could eventually pursue a topically-varied podcast, but doing that requires the listeners to have a vested interest in the host himself. Perhaps a way to get around that is to make it a general news type of deal where what I discuss varies based upon who I have on with me. That or I start in one of my two areas of greatest knowledge (hockey or tech/gaming) and slowly branch out from there after I've established some semblance of an audience.

My only reservations on doing a hockey-related podcast is how can I separate myself from the crowd? There are so many radio show hosts, TV analysts, and podcast hosts out there that all kinda sound the same or approach things the same kind of way. You guys know how much I hate the lack of diversity of personality in the sport and I really see that extending beyond the athletes to the hosts and analysts as well.

That is a problem. The easy answer would be to take the radical approach (Tanner and Clouts on this website for instance), but then you'll lack credibility.
