Some are easier to for all to see, I can tell if a diver makes a splash going in the water and if the figure skater falls on his ass.

Now synchronized swimming or rythmic gymnastics none of us (except DT) can tell between a great and a poopty performance.

And even in diving when you listen you'll hear the analyst say "oh it was a great dive but the judges can't give an 8 right now the best are still to come"
