I agree completely about his development and would be a nice shift to see the Oil take their time instead of rushing things.

So who's EDM top end D prospect? Reinhart? Haven't heard much good about him, really, though I haven't seen him play much so I wouldn't know. I guess Nurse is younger, but how GPs until they're no longer a prospect? Cupboard looks pretty bleak on the defensive end to me:

I just don't get why they seemingly refuse to draft a Dman early in the 1st while the Nucks do it no problem (despite Juolevi being "a reach" at #5). Oil clearly could use a top end Dman in the near future and it usually takes at least a few years for that position to develop compared to forward.

Nurse and Davidson are both young left handed dman who oilers need to play and develop. adding a guy like Juolevi doesnt really solve a need, just adds more to the pile of 23 year and younger lefties they have (including Klefbom). Not a bad idea just is more of the same and creates a log jam on the left side

I mean, if the team had taken Murray over Yak, I don't think anyone would've ripped them a new one. I think everyone thought that's who they should've grabbed. And it's not like Yak was miles ahead in projections either. Murray was pretty close and ranked at #2.

Had they drafted Murray, perhaps the team would've also drafted Ristolainen the following year instead of Nurse to balance the pairings. Klefbom- Petry and Murray- Ristolainen wouldve been a good looking D corps.

I think the fact that eberle is unequivocally the far superior player is exactly one of the reasons yaks should play with Connor

We know Yaks struggles with nuge.
And now that hall isn't on Leon's wing- ld's contribution is abit of a question mark too. So why saddle him with another question mark in yaks and vice versa ?

Even without taking into account that yaks has played well with Connor, we should do everything we can to insulate the players who need said insulation

I'll even go so far as to say take lucic away from Connor and let him ride shotgun with Leon (which provides that aforementioned insulation)

And I think we can feel confident that Connor is gonna excel regardless of his linemates are. (within reason of course)
It's actually probably the only thing we know for sure on the entire roster.
And we don't even have to worry about the protection factor that some may like having lucic with Connor, as maroon is a beast in his own right.

Didn't it come out like a year or so ago that the Oiler scouts were pushing for Ryan Murray, but at a meeting leading up to draft day, Darryl Katz overruled that selection and forced them to go with Yakupov?
I remember for most of the year, Yak was ahead in rankings by a mile but Murray finished the year very strong and people within a few organizations started to question if he was a reach at #1 anymore.

Yak needs a serious confidence boost. I think the team should give him a whole year, all in, no matter what. Put him in all the best situations, with the best players. He's played afraid every year since his rookie year. Play him with McDavid, give him so much ice time he's throwing up on the bench between shifts. At the very least he'll post better numbers and be worth more in a trade situation next year. Yeah, people will say it's the result of playing with McDavid but maybe they'll also wonder if maybe he's finally growing into that player that every scout in the system said he would be. I think if the franchise can find a way to put the fire back in his belly they could still have a player on their hands. If the team makes a serious commitment to this kid and his ability is still in question come the end of the season, hit the eject button and never speak of this again.
