There is nothing wrong with the people. The city is just a desolate wasteland. Honestly, you can walk around downtown Buffalo, past about 11pm, and you will literally not see a single person in the streets.

But at least you can walk around after dark.

- prock

The phenomenon of urban flight hit Buffalo particularly hard.

It seems like the city is going through its own rebuilding plan now - you are seeing a revitalizing of the downtown. Hopefully residential development occurs.

It's something Toronto does particularly well - keeping people in the downtown core.

Microsoft had their convention in Toronto last month. I was talking with some out of towners - they were blown away by how busy "the business district" was at night.

Isn't the 2ND buyout window really small?

I think itmay be closed now.

- Atomic Wedgie

Believe it closed around August 3rd according to a website that must not be named.

That's not true.

Due to Canada's more generous social programs, we simply don't have the same type of poverty and ghettoes.

I think that since they already filed for the buyout, if the case is decided in the Leafs favour, then it goes through. Don't know for sure.
- Bower

yeah... buyout rules are a bit too complex for me

there should be an option where a team can just flat out pay the remaining full salary to get it off the books

injured player or no.

Backes, a third liner? You probably should look up his stats over his career. Backes is the type of player you need in the playoffs.
- Bruiniak

I forgot St Louis and Backes have had so many consistent deep runs in the playoffs...

if you're living in the downtown core, absolutely. But there are some pretty unreal areas in the suburbs of Detroit. Buffalo, being smaller, simply doesn't have that.

I live in Vancouver but can't see what would make Toronto drastically better to live in than Buffalo for a hockey player. In terms of the country's themselves yes I would live in Canada anyday over the U.S but playing pro hockey it seems marginal at best. 5x the commute time, the same s^%t weather, higher taxes, and media pressure galore on 3 sports franchises that haven't won anything since 93'. Toronto has nice areas but it's just a big city like anywhere else.

this really shouldn't be much of an argument. All I was saying, is that Winnipeg and Buffalo both have fantastic rebuilds going on. I'm just saying, the fact that they are Buffalo and Winnipeg, is somewhat an equilizer, on the fact that Toronto is a year or two behind.

thats not saying much tho

Lake Ontario's gotten a lot better than it used to be, all the Great Lakes. You can eat fish from Toronto harbour. Although now they're just going to be taken over by asian carp.

The smaller lakes in Ontario are often more polluted than Lake Ontario now.

I think when you look at NHL cities though, you have to look at from a young millionaires perspective, and look at what is available to you when you have piles of cash. It's different than looking at it from what the average person can do on their salaries.

Yes, Buffalo has it's positives. It's not violent and crime ridden like Detroit is. it's just not a particularly nice place.

Winnipeg is an interesting one. Ever been there? I would describe it as the biggest small town I've ever seen. It feels like you're in cottage country, right in the middle of the city. Every house is a little rundown bungalow built in the 70s, the kind you'd find on the water on Georgian Bay. Miles and miles and miles of them.

That's very true about Toronto's downtown core, there's no urban flight there at all. A lot of it is pretty good, with obvious huge problems.

I did wonder, when I saw this excited talk about build a deck park over the rail lands downtown, creating a huge 'Central Park' there. That sounds really amazing and I'm all for it. But I thought, how is it such an epic struggle to fund the desperately needed transit, like a downtown relief line, and this question still has not been anywhere near settled, and we're talking about a massive, engineered urban park? Can we pay for the other poop first? I love the idea but wtf?

It's true, Toronto's waterfront is not nearly as bad people think. Look at all the blue flag beaches. There's fish in northern Ontario lakes that are dirtier.

yeah i would likely take buffalo over winnipeg... and yeah i have been to both cities

i mean... winnipeg... closest major city to it? regina? saskatoon? thunder bay? all of which are lengthy drives

buffalo has the city of new york right on its doorstep... and just because a plyer plays in a city doesnt mean he lives there in the offseason as well
