If correct, the flyers don't see him as a 5mm player.

Mostly because he isn't.

4.5 MAX and even that would be a terrible deal for the Flyers.

- MikesPillBottle

Please. 4.5 is very fair for him in today's NHL.

Kid has really one season of play where he isn't a vanilla warm body.

First year he was positively noticed when he wasn't putting up points.

I'd love to keep him, but (frank) you buddy.

Those numbers are most likely what is filed to the arbitraror, which iirc has to be done 48h before the hearing. The numbers of the 'real' negotiations are behind closed doors and probably looks quite different regarding term.
- PhillySteen

They are the numbers submitted to the arbiter. That means at most Schenn is getting $5.5mm next year and at least $4.25mm. However, I'm not talking about the real numbers being tossed about.

Ideally the Flyers would like to sign Schenn to a 4-6 year deal, based on the comments Hextall has made and the way he's gone about locking up others to contracts.

The thing is, if the arbiter decides for the Flyers, Schenn is a UFA at the end of two years. If they got a one year award, they could re-evaluate at the end of that one year and still retain control over him, without the immediate risk of losing him for nothing.

Not sure how being a 20 goal, 40+ point player makes him a vanilla warm body. Schenn has increased his point scoring, from the previous season, every year as a Flyer.

Choosing to make him a UFA who can leave at age 27 seems crazy to me.

For me, up until this season if he wasn't putting up points he was invisible. Net neutral.

It's one year, a contract year and he wants a big payout. Prove it for more than one season son.

Yup. But given that arbitration numbers tend to be high and low water marks, I think they get a deal done before the award comes down.

Net neutral cracks me up. Schenn's progression even with inconsistency, is not an unusual path of development for a young player. There is a gamble involved with making him prove it for more than one season. He's not looking for a big payout, he's looking for market value. His demand is on the high side, and the Flyers is on the low side. Both are typical positions for either side.

I see, I thought he would be UFA after 16-17.

I thought that, too, when the talk of him getting signed started, but after double checking it, he's not scheduled until 17-18

Best prospect not in the NHL!!!!

Guy gets hit with that hype and doesn't live up to it, some never forget.

Schenn is a valuable top 6 guy. I don't know that I see him as a core piece, but if they can get him for 4 years at $4.85mm, I'm good with it. I just really don't want to exceed $5mm per for him

An arbitration case can only be for either one season, or two.
- MJL

First somebody already said. And I'm not talking about arbitration I mean the entire negotiation. From everything I've seen read heard let's speculate flyers want 4 to 5 years at 4.5 5 million. Traditionally players will take less for term. It feels like Schenn for that term wants 6 6.5 a year. Verse he's willing to take 1 or 2 years at 5 million and bank on his play earning him a larger deal.

I love that net neutral line haha.

The points were there, but before this season if he wasn't putting up points he was essentially a warm body.

Again, I'd like to keep him but not on a contract that becomes one you cannot move. Tired of that poop.

It's different for different levels of players. In my opinion, Schenn is not the kind of player who can command a term of longer than 4-5 years. So for him, 4-5 years is a long term deal. 6 6-5M is not a reasonable or fair number for Schenn, and again, in my opinion, there's no way he can command a deal at that number, regardless of term.

I don't see any danger of Schenn being signed to a contract that can't be moved. 20 goals and 40 points has a lot of value in this league.

You're opinion of Schenn is not the same opinion of himself. Again I think he truly believes he's going to be a player who can command 7 million a year in 1 2 years. I think that's a major factor in this negotiation.

Not sure how you've come to that conclusion. Are you telling me that Schenn would not be willing to sign a 4 year deal for 5.5M a year?

The issue for the Flyers is replacement cost. Overall, scoring is a general concern for the team, which Hextall has acknowledged. They really don't have many pieces in the system that are 60+ point players within the next 3-4 years. Konecny is the only realistic option in that window. Going to the UFA market is going to cost more than what Schenn will get in this deal.

So the team has some constraints to manage in this negotiation. Not saying Schenn has all the leverage, but Hextall is not dealing from absolute strength either.
