indeed, already has been for much of his career.
Fans see the 20 to 25 minutes a game attached to his otherwise non-existant stat sheet and think we got the second coming of Matthias Ohlund and yet, he has rarely actually been effective at defense when deployed.
I am totally hoping for a turn-around on his part, but to believe it's a given fact that we just aquired a top two d-man is unrealistic and irrational.

I am pretty sure Benning and his scouts have seen him play many many many many times before deciding to trade a first round prospect and a 2 nd round pick.
I would be very surprised if he just went to Hockey Futures and just read his profile |

It will really depend on how the ice-time plays out but I have a hard time seeing him being an everyday player with the current roster.
Obviously that is assuming that Larsen will be able to hold down a regular spot. I think that he will be given a fair amount of rope considering they need him for that PP.
I would put my money on Rodin but he's in a very similar situation. I guess Gaunce would be the only other option?

I think he really believes his own viewpoint and no one elses, the only way to value talent is with fancy stats. If GM's only viewed a player by advanced stats and no other intangibles (like Tanner) there would be a one dimensional style of play. Benning was spot on when he said that it's a tool to assist making decisions and Tanner is extremely naive to believe it's the end all to be all in making team personal decisions.
How can a player log 20-25 mins a night on a team that not only made the playoffs but were considered a contender all year, suddenly be a considered a 5-7 role D-man because he didn't rate high in fancy stats. |

It's simple really, tanner has never played the game...if you have played the game you realize there is more to hockey than advanced stats. There is a team in my league that has an average age of 21 and they are loaded w skill...my team is generally 30-38 and we have a mixture of skill and size. We win every time despite being slower, older and way less skilled. The other team won't even go into the corners. It's like the old game Ice Hockey on Nintendo. You need skinny fast guys (analytical darlings), moderate sized players and you need the fat bruisers |

Sitting in the backyard on my iPad about to throw six fresh crab into the pot for dinner tonight, man it's nice back here! I think it's called enjoying the fruits of your labour
My buddy bought me a 12 pack of Corona for my birthday about a month ago, Corono, it's like we've never met
But I may have to find a slice of lime and have a couple to get rid of them while the crab boils. |

Yeah he's solid. Just wish he would learn to assert himself more in the game. Skates well, joins the rush. Good overall defensively but for a top 10 pick especially in a plus year like last year needs to take the game into his own hands. |

He seems like the pro game, similar to Jake Virtanen, is more suited to the way he plays. I think he's a really solid kid playing a difficult position. I suspect he make the team out of camp this year. |

To answer this I think it's just common sense. If a guy wasn't good, I doubt he would be playing 20-25 mins a night. Also if that player wasn't good and he was playing 20-25 mins a night, I highly doubt he's on a good team then.
Also if Fancy stats were the end all be all, would have traded Sbisa for Matthews or Laine at the draft probably. |

He hasn't 'rated high' in any stats, be it fancy or otherwise ahah.
That said, Florida must have rated/valued the likes of Yandle, Demers and Phychk (sp) over EG in the sense that they though he was disspensable.
Hopefully Benning comes out on top this time around.

I think JB said he liked Gudbranson back to when he was drafted, had a good interview, showed good character.
If Hutton and Gudbranson play well together, then we won't have too much to worry about with the dmen. |
