They got younger. They got more upside. They got a right handed shot. And, they now have $2.4 million worth of cap space to use this year, and whatever manner they deem fit. Personally, I see them signing Hudler or Gagner with that money. - Pete V
This does lead to speculation they make another move that increases payroll. I like your suggestions, but I'll add a 4C to the mix. It's the one position they really don't have going into the season. Maybe they overpay for a Matt Cullen or trade for someone who's at $2/$2.5.
Also, I wouldn't be shocked it they trade a large salary for large(r) salary, i.e. send G or Staal out and take back $6+. We'll see. Things finally got interesting!

Gorton's tone is that he is done. He won't discuss other deals he might be planning, but several times says things can still change #NYR

SO are the leafs the only Canadian team to not disappoint the fanbase this off season so far, I mean they have decades of disappointment to contend with but ya know... |

Calgary had a pretty good offseason. Landed Tkachuk in the draft, got a #1 goaltender. Brouwer deal wasn't amazing, but it wasn't terrible either. |

I'm going to go full Jabroni and respond to myself.
Forgot about Jooris, so scratch that 4C thing. Salary for Salary trade in season. You heard it here first.

Yeah but what's the likelihood of that. Girardi is terrible and grossly overpaid, someone isn't going to send you back a deceny $6M player for a terrible $5.5M player. Staal is decent, but still not going to land you a significantly better player making marginally more money.
My guess is that any more expensive player you want isn't going to be the return for either of those two and any more expensive player that would come back in return for one of them isn't going to be very good either. |

Must be at Applebees, because I was leaving to pickup my carside order today when I saw the Rangers made this trade. Can't be a coincidence. |

I do not believe he is done. One of the best short term things about this deal is that it gives the Rangers space, and while I think it does provide them with flexibility to get Kreider locked in at a potentially higher rate, I also don't think the Rangers are going to go into the season with an excess of unused cap space. Not to mention, if they sign one of these remaining free agents to a cheap one year deal, those type players also can bring a return of assets at the deadline (which the Rangers could use). I think the Rangers should now be looking at the second tier UFA market.

it's safe to say that the organization was spooked by the awful Penalty kill this season. Ziba, Grabner and Jooris all are penalty killers. And if you think back a couple years ago the PK saved this team many nights. Also I wonder if Beukeboom hire had anything to do with that aswell. |

Klein for Athanisiou and sign Schultz, Athanasiou and Zibanijad could be a good combo, we could call them the "Is that guy on the terrorist watch list" line |

Athanisiou exploded onto the scene out of nowhere last year. Looks like a great young player. Not sure the Wings would want to deal him for an older player.
Schultz resigned with Pitt btw |

Probably not very likely, but if you trade one set of problems for another, it could (note the could) happen. LA is so cash strapped, they could do a Brown for Girardi swap, where NY retains a portion of salary. I doubt the Rangers want Brown, but I'm certain there's a situation somewhere around the league where the deal could make sense. Whether it happens or not is another story.
As I think about it, A Nash trade with retained salary could happen, although I'm one of the few in the Nash camp, so I hope it doesn't happen unless it's a clear win for NY. |

Rangers will save this $2.4M on this deal and the $7.8MM from Nash's deal after next year to bring John Tavares to the New York Rangers!!
Parentaeu, Chimera and Czikas aren't going to be enough to keep him on the Islanders. Another season wasted for JT |

I am going to miss Brassard. He was a real solid Ranger, and a very good playoff performer, but I like this trade a lot for the Rangers long term, and maybe in the short term as well if they do something with the $2.4 million they freed up. Interesting trade to say the least. - Pete V
