I would have offered the 8th pick, Girgensons + for him. Girgensons could have replaced Backus. I'm sure that wouldn't be enough. - SABRES 89
For a guy with an expiring contract?? Now way. Nylander will replace Kane nicely in two years, maybe less |

He's a year and a half younger as Hoffman will be 27 very early in the coming season.
I think Hoffman is going to cost more than you think in terms of $$$ due to his production, especially last year. - kingcong39
Hoffman only made 2M this past season I thought? Two near 30 goal seasons in the NHL. I bet he jumps to a 2 or 3 year deal at 5.5M MAX.
Okposo as a UFA can demand what he wants but I think he goes to LA, MIN, or PHI honestly. |

With only two good seasons I can see 5 mil, not 7.
He's the definition of a one trick pony. That trick is something we need though.
That's another reason I don't waqnt Okposo. He's not a great goal scorer. |

Agreed. I'm just pointing out that Okposo isn't exactly a world beater. He's good.
Personally, I think Nash makes the most sense.
It wouldn't cost a lot. - sbroads24
I agree as well. But those calling him a scrub or not deserving of a high dollar amount are a bit off base.
I'm not sure if I would rather trade for Nash at a very low price or sign Okposo. And that's IF he'll waive for the Sabres. I guess I would lean towards Nash, even though last season was extremely discerning. |

Most are in "scramble to sign new guys mode". I really don't think that we are that far off. I would LOVE to sign Vesey, perfect fit. Otherwise, Murray can work his magic over the rest of the summer. Stamkos isn't a be all end all. - bobmack13
If he doesn't sign here... I really don't care where he signs as long as it is not with Toronto. That is all I care about. It can be ANYWHERE else except maybe Boston or Philly. I'd loathe those two.
I think Vesey signs here and I'm about 85% sure it gets done. |

i think we have a 50/50 shot on Vesey.. he is going to evaluate where he feels he has the best shot. that could be chicago, st. louis, tampa, pitt. i think all those have a better chance for him to rack up the points so he gets a huge next contract - IndianaSabresFan
He has a better chance racking up points on those teams (maybe getting a top 6 role, maybe not) than playing next to an emerging superstar in Eichel. No friggin way.... |

Okay so I remembered it slightly wrong. Thanks for sharing this again though.
I really believe... All things equal..
Detroit is on their way down.
TB will remain at their level.. an ECF team but wants Stamkos on the wing.
Van will be no where close.
BUF will be in the playoffs every year that Stamkos is here I'd bet.
Toronto will have another year or two to clean up but then will be in the playoffs every year with Stamkos.
I think it will come down to what HE actually wants. Toronto is not great at luring in the biggest fish even if it is their home town. I still think TB, DET, then BUF most likely. - JVince11
I think it comes down to 3 teams imo, TB, BUF and Toronto with TB in the driver seat right now.

Common ground with the bolded part.
I would prefer Hoffman as well, although I think he is getting closer to $6M with his past two seasons and his age.
All I am saying is that Okposo is not some inflated numbers guy and he is worth $6M per.
The max years I would prefer to go on him at that rate would be 4, maybe 5, but that would be stretching it. I don't want to pay him past his 33rd birthday. |
|
|
|
Because 12M per here is actually less than 11M per in Detroit or Toronto via taxes I guess. SOmeone posted it yesterday. It'd be like 6.1M in Tor, 5.4 here, and 5.6 in Detroit. - JVince11
Nope, DET taxes are slightly better than NYS with FLA a ton better of course. CAD is the worst, though he has the endorsement thing going on there. |

Unless Tampa suddenly ups their offer to $10M per, I don't see any way he signs there.
For him to sign there for even $9M per would be very surprising to me, especially with the NHPLA in his ear as I am certain they are about continuing to push salaries forward. |

Honestly this team could make the playoffs this year without making any changes from the roster from this past season. The 2nd year (hopeful) jumps of Reinhart, Eichel and the continuity of these players playing together and a healthy Lehner puts us in the conversation. Now we added Kulikov, Nylander (who knows maybe he makes the roster although it's highly unlikely), and possibly Vesey and those are great pieces to add to an already improving young hockey club. You're right when you say Stamkos is not the end of all means, but if he does go to Toronto then we are behind them IMO and that's what scares me and frustrates me as a Sabre fan, especially living in Canada. |

12 mill is way too f#!king much!!!!! Walk away and find another fish. - bobmack13
What superstar fish would that be? There's never been a player of his talent entering UFA at his age before. Although who knows hwat happens with Tavares next year or the following year, whenever he becomes a UFA if Brooklyn doesn't re-up him |

I can agree. But I think someone like him can be found cheaper.
If they decide to sign him it won't be the end of the world |

This exact rationale is why I struggle with how Voracek is worth 8.5M. That's only 250k less than Giroux. Voracek has better passing stats but goal scoring is close.

I'll be a lot less agitated when that actually gets done. If that's the case, what's the hold up? We have to be offering max.
Just a thought, could we be driving the price up on Stamkos to get another team to overpay, knowing that he's not interested in us????? |

its not guaranteed he plays with Eichel. And playing with Kane > playing with Eichel. what if he gets on a line with Tarasenko, crosby, malkin. all these guys are proven. I get that eichel is good and would be a good linemate for him, but you have to be realistic he is still developing |

who would be better, Connolly or Pirri? - mhp
both, put connolly on 4th line, move him up to 3rd line if he explodes
pirri can play center on 3rd line, of girgens and larsson are focused, drop pirri to 4th line |

I think the whole tax thing is blown way out of proportion. At 10-12 Mil a year do you really think these guys are worrying about taxes. It's a non factor. |

Why does it have to be a "superstar" fish. Pretty much anyone that is on a line w/ O'Reilly is going to produce. We need a left winger that can keep up w/ Jack (Reinhart on the right), and a couple of compliments. |

The Bonus structure can still be negotiated. That is the hold up. He wants a top 5 pick bonus structure with a max out of 2.5M in bonuses. The 925K at 2 years ELC is solid and can't be changed.
I think the hold up is that we can't actually sign him until July 1st any way. So why even announce it now? It can be a "splash" on Friday or Thursday night to get a guy like Stamkos or Eriksson to be like "okay.. well maybe That team really is putting together a strong unit." |

I don't think TOR is in play here, and either do most of the TOR team writers. Replace TOR with DET. My rough odds:
TB 35%
BUF 25%
DET 20%
FIELD 20% |
