I think the Oilers have done fine drafting in the first round. I think save for the Yak pick, which I'm sure all Oiler fans wish they would have at least looked at trading down and getting extra assets, there isn't much they should/could've done differently. It's the drafting in round 2-7 that's been the issue, plus the overvaluing and unwillingness to part with any of the 1OAs to try and address glaring issues that has been the problem. The problem with the Oilers has never been in their top 6 even before McDavid came, it's the fact that the Oilers are so top heavy that now they're in a spot where they may lose someone in the expansion draft for nothing.

Who would be on your protected list? McDavid's exempt, Draisaitl I'm not sure on, so that leaves Hall, Nuge, Eberle, Yak as your skaters with Nurse, Klefbom and Talbot as two of your D and goalie that I'd believe PC would protect.

Good post
Late round defying has been abysmal no doubt

Got some pieces in the last few years that look promising and we're correctly developing slow. But we'll see. And not a ton of them to be sure.
Davidson was a huge bright light last year. Hopefully he continues.

But yeah pre rebuild and even the first year or two where guys would be contributing now, was mostly a miss

Leon's a beaut I think. He's far less expendable than nuge. I'd be shocked if him, nurse or Connor weren't oilers next season

Go the 8 -1 goalie route

Connor/nurse/puljujarvi exempt

Hall, Leon, nuge, ebs

Klefbom, sekera, Davidson , ?

Talbot

Ima assume that other one is the defender acquisition.
Or if they trade one of the forwards for said defender; said acquisition and pouliot maybe...

Ima assume yaks is gone. But if he has a Season like last, he wouldn't be protected.
If he turns it around- maybe expose pouliot instead (whis s risky been really good for the oilers- so it's no slam dunk )

Eberle and RNH need to be traded before start of the year. If not, it would be a huge mistake.

I'm excited for Training Camp. Gonna be great to have some talented competition and you never know, there could be surprises. Do we still sign Larsen? Where does hit fit? Will he sign to play in the AHL?

Here is a Canucks related question....if a good deal is on the table for the Sedins do you pull the trigger? Also Stevie Wonder can see we need to trade to get some help

Is Nurse still exempt? I thought he's played enough games to not be exempt? But yeah, if I'm the Oilers I'm definitely looking at doing something Nuge and Yak to try and at least get some assets because if you aren't going to protect one or the other you can be sure LV is going to take the one who isn't protected. Maybe might be best to just expose Yak and let him be picked up because I don't think you'll get much for him at this point.

Not to mention Puljujarvi makes Yak expendable at this point even if he wasn't already.

Sure, but I doubt they waive.

They will retire Canucks which I'm fine with.
Trade Edler and Hansen and I'm happy.

Yakupov should never have been picked.
Eberle and Nuge should be traded.

The rest and the return will set you guys up for 10 years.

No team has the assets or the ability to take on their salary, not that they'd waive their NMCs at this point. We really only have spare parts and depreciated assets like Burrows, Higgins, Sbisa, Miller and Hansen who we could conceiveably give up and probably only get late round picks for at this point, unless we're willing to eat salary or take bad contracts back which I wouldn't do at this point, not unless the return is astronomical which would never happen.

So are you guys retooling and just gonna go hard on Lucic and Eriksson or other UFAs to see if you can make another run or is this a rebuild?

Yes every Oiler fan realizes this and are willing to lose someone in order to get help on the back end...sadly at the end of the day we arent the ones who can pull triggers on trades....so its either PC over values our guys which is dumb or other GMs are playing hardball which somewhat hurts them if they are in need of skilled forwards

You guys should have done RNH and Yak for Gudbranson and a first... or should have offered it I mean, although maybe Chia did.

Yep- rookie as of this past season . Only ever played a few games/playoff games on the farm after junior season (and 4 with the big club) until this season

Would you do RNH and Yak for Guddy and Granlund?

I don't know if I would to be honest. RHD are hard to find.

It's a stealth rebuild that's hidden under the guise of staying competitive. I see JB signing Eriksson and possibly Lucic and making a play for Stamkos (if only to drive up the price for whoever signs him). The thing is, our fanbase is too fickle to tolerate a total rebuild, and our owner isn't the type to allow us to miss the playoffs for too long.

It comes down to the fact that to pay to see a game at Rogers Arena is far too expensive for the average fan, the type of fan who'd be happy with seeing youth struggle, grow and watch the team slowly become great. Tickets start at $50 for the cheapest seats and that's not including the cost of transportation, parking, food, drinks, etc. Notwithstanding the fact that the average fan lives mostly in the Valley which is the only place that's cheap enough to buy a home.
