CHI takes Alex DeBrincat at No. 39. Was No. 33 on TSN list. One of only two 50-goal scorers in draft. Bellows was the other. |

For experienced campaigners, the current men in charge seem to be playing this with no set plan. Fair enough players like Panarin are just freaks that you can't predict will break the bank, but I would have thought there's plans D, E, & F ready to roll for 'Justin'.
In saying that, even the Saad trade, & the Sharp debacle are events that should have people concerned about how water tight the dinghy is?? It just looks like they don't know, & to say you don't know what a trade will return ok, you prepare for the worst & the best. You have a plan for at least the cap, the ability of the team you ice is harder to prepare for.
An example would be, who do they have in mind for the LW position? How much are they putting aside to fill that gap, or which player is being promoted until they have to replace him (& how much are they putting aside?)?
Edit:'Justin - just in case' - Aussiepenguin
The model was always sign the core and fill around from Rockford, NCAA and Euro FA. Wash, rinse, repeat. A solid model that has won 3 cups.
Problem is the cap hasn't cooperated so there is less to pay the fill ins as you lose talent every year when it's time for that talent to be paid. Add they have depleted the farm and draft picks to make TDL moves for cup runs making it more difficult each year to replace lost talent due to the cap. This happens year after year after year after year and soon there is little or no more rope to pull on, which is where they may be now, a 7 man core that eats near 70% of the cap, little talent, draft picks or money to replace the solid support players lost.
Then with this model as the cap constricts you slowly slide backwards into mediocrity. That's where the absence of plans b, c and d are evident, as you allude to.
The model with 67% of the cap tied up in 7 core players (not counting AA's 4.5 mil) has seemingly run it's course but as of yet I just don't see a plan b, c or d. And that is exactly what I've been watching for this offseason.

Datsyuk has a flat salary in this three year deal. So Detroit did not get any benefit of cap lower than any salary. So there's that.
For Hoss, unless there is an amendment to the CBA, the 'Hawks are stuck with a minimum $3.675M recapture penalty. Plus there is another huge hole to fill.
I for one believe Hoss has a some tread left on those tires. Properly used --- and here we go again with making the right cap moves to fill out a good roster --- Hossa has a minimum three more years. He is an outstanding athlete, and great 200' player. - blackhawk24
How can any league that hopes be seen as having any integrity:
Allow a team that executes a contract that was completely legal (and approved by the league when signed) to be subsequently potentially punished for it?
Allow (a) a team to eliminate a cap hit by trading the contract of a player who has no intention of playing, and (b) allow a team to get that contract to satisfy its cap floor without spending one dime for it or actually have the player skate for them? |

Per @marklazerus
Alex Debrincat is the 21st-rated North American skater. He is 5-foot-7, but had 51 goals in each of his two OHL seasons. |

Chicago takes Chad Krys, one of biggest fallers on my board from last summer. Very mobile and skilled but needs to improve defense.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 30s31 seconds ago
CHI takes Chad Krys at No. 45. Another guy going to BU. Krys was No. 67 on TSN list. |
