Sens roster + Logan Brown = better roster than Toronto roster + Mathews...

I'm a bit mixed on this move, but it seems they got a player they didn't expect to be available at #11 and may have thought would become a trade target by other teams looking to move up a few spots. Personally, I'm not as high on Logan Brown as some, but I like to see the team target and aggressively pursue the players they want. At the end of the day, Brown obviously brings a lot of size to the position, and projects pretty safely as a puck-distributing 2nd line centre. Quality depth at centre never hurts, and it will help give the team some options when Turris and Zibanejad start needing new contracts.

man that 27 year old GM in Arizona just got bent over a chair by ken holland and the veteran didn't even use the lube.

that was absolute robbery by detroit

like hell he did. He did well.

He basically moved up from 20th overall to the 16th overall, when an amazing dman was still on the table, for a low chance of success pick and some cap hit they weren't going to use anyway.

Brown + Buddy Robinson + Paul as a 4th line this year = giant wrecking crew.

it would be different if they had to pay him, but it's only cap hit, not salary. They have almost $30M in open cap hit, won't come anywhere close to using it, and are rebuilding. They basically moved up and got a kid that was at one point considered a top 5 pick, and possibly the best dman in the draft, for pretty damn close to free.

Agreed - I'm sure if you'd told the Coyotes yesterday they'd come out of the first round with Keller and Chychrun without giving up a significant asset they would have been very happy.

2006-2007 Ottawa Senators (if Chara kept instead of Redden)

Heatley - Spezza - Alfredsson
Schaefer - Fisher - Comrie
Vermette - Kelly - Neil
Schubert - McAmmond - Sprykin

Mezaros - Chara
Phillips - Volchenkov

Priessing - Corvo

Emery

Telling you, they would of won the cup had Chara atleast been here.

Which #1 centers in the NHL right now were not drafted in the 1st round?
(Standards to be #1 center - must be atleast 60+ points)

Pavel Datsyuk (retired)
Patrice Bergeron - rare exception taking in deep 2003 draft (2nd round)
David Krejci - more like strong #2. Like Turris but with 5 60 pt seasons already

All the other guys in the last 15-20 (- a couple of guys max) were drafted in round 1. Why do I bring this up?

Because here's what the Sens have taken in the last 5 NHL 1st rounds:

Mika Zibanejad: Big shot, body, potential ceiling. Needs to bring it together.
Curtis Lazar: Captain material, can play anywhere. Dustin Brown ceiling.
Colin White: Solid 2-way captain material with potential scoring like Bergeron
Logan Brown: Massive big body playmaker. Looking to turn into Thornton lite

To get 4 qualities centers like that OUTSIDE the top 5 (we're leaving out Ceci, Chabot, and the pieces to get Ryan) that's a pretty solid group of potential. The job the Sens coaching and development staff has is too work on these guys tremendously to utilize the potential that's already in them.

right...... just reminiscing.

To be fair, if Phanuef can work on his feet work against speedy forwards (positioning*) and Ceci develops his as well, this top 4 the Sens ice could be as good or better than those 4. Certainly not as physical but point production and threat from the point without question

Crazy to think that Ceci is the only player on the Senators roster drafted since Murray was GM from the OHL. Huge strike outs on Noessen and Puemple.

Hard to believe Brown will be the 2nd impact player from the OHL. Just stats wise something like 20% of NHL players come from the OHL, ottawa in 9 years of drafting has 1 player.

Ottawa should be well represented on Team USA at World Juniors this Christmas with Colin White and Logan Brown.

- Erik6Karlsson5

While simply considering last year's roster I would agree, but in Toronto's case adding Matthews as well as guys like Nylander, Marner, etc. and a goalie who doesn't let in shots from centre, gotta tip my hat to the Leafs here.

Don't know much about Brown but as some have pointed out giving up a 3rd to get the guy you have your eye on isn't anything to lose sleep over.

Ottawa has a very strong bias towards picking local kids. Did not know that Brown has spent most of his summers and Christmas in Ottawa, his parents and grandparents live in Ottawa and he has been doing all his summer training and strength work with the Sens training staff. They obviously knew what they were drafting.

i looked at their cap situation and actually agree with you. at first glance it looks like a ridiculously one sided deal.....but i never realized how much f-ing cap space that team has. even with pronger's and datsyuk's cap hits (12.5 mil) they're only riding a total cap of 46 mil.....that's crazy.

Not really... they don't pay Datsyuk a dime and eat cap hit they don't need anyway.

if that was the guy dorion wanted (and his draft record is pretty solid) and he felt there was a chance NJ was going to take him.....it's a very small price to pay.
- sensarmy_11

NJ might have had an offer from below 12 to trade down and used that as leverage in the Ottawa deal.

Doubt it... but I'm not opposed to the Sens "not taking chances". They traded up to get Karlsson, too... why not? Worked last time, didn't it?

They STILL have almost $30M in space. They can't use it. They're stockpiling picks and prospects, and don't WANT to spend to the cap floor. Datsyuk's cap hit is almost a benefit to them. They totally made out like bandits.

Exactly! I laugh at guys who say he got taken. Essentially all he did was get a better draft pick and dump Joe Vitale.

Arizona pays zero dollars to Datsyuk. They just burn up some unused salary cap space that they had no plans to use.

Ya, he really got bent over....getting a better draft pick for nothing. Terrible deal.

I actually think both teams made out like bandits......Detroit got rid of the cap hit, got an extra 2nd Rd pick and all it cost them was to move back 4 spots

You'd probably have to include Prince on that list, but that's still not much OHL content. Plus, given that the team probably didn't know a day after drafting Noesen and Puempel that they had struck out, it's probably a bit early to be already touting Brown as an impact player.
