I still think you are grossly undervaluing him if you think we were lucky to unload the contract.

It's amazing that he has been able to avg 29 pts a season and play in 85% of the games + 100% of the playoffs over the past 5 years, considering he has that elastic band for a groin.....

- belcherbd

He had 11 points in 72 games. He is a offensive defenseman isn't he? That's atrocious for his contract. He brought nothing to the table other than injuring teammates with his beer league slap shot. His groin is the reason he can't skate. You can still suit of for a hockey game with an injured groin

I thought Garrison had a limited ntc so the options of trading partners was limited.

If it is any consolation, at least he didnt pull a Vrbata and give a bogus list of trading partners

- hillbillydeluxe

He did have a NTC but he was also coming off a season where he was our leading scorer from the backend and had played 81 games. Teams always need relatively young top 4 D signed to reasonable deals.

And actually Benning confirmed that Vrbata's list included many teams he thought he could work with but that there just wasn't interest iirc.

Actually Vrbata confirmed that he gave a list Benning couldn't work with. Isn't this common knowledge?

Edit. It's somewhat irrelevant as no teams wanted Vrbata but he def. didn't do the team any favours.

You really want to base your opinion of him off of one season? How about the playoffs when he put up closer to his career numbers?

I don't think many consider him an offensive Dman, he just happened to score 16 goals one season. He has always been an all round Dman with a big shot.

I think your argument is pretty weak as far as his injuries, he must be a pretty good player if he can still be a top 4 D playing injured all the time. He isn't that fast and did get walked around at times but from what I recall he was smart enough to be in the right position more often than not.

Ice time, fancy stats, +/-, deployment all support him being a decent D and not the anchor that you are suggesting. Not to mention that Yzerman has done a pretty good job building that team and I have a hard time doubting his opinion.

This is what Carol reported and I couldn't find the source. I do recall hearing Benning say the same thing that Vrbata gave him some options. I don't remember Vrbata saying that he sabotaged the deal but I could be wrong.

As for Radim Vrbata, Benning asserted that he provide a "good list," but that there wasn't anything the Canucks could do.

Edit: I imagine this is what you are refereeing to. Sounds like he probably only gave them a few options.

“I don’t think I handcuffed them, but I knew what I was doing,” Vrbata said this week. “I could have given a lot more (options) and I would have moved.

“If I wanted to get traded, I would have been traded.”

I'm not going to change your mind and I dont care too. Count me in the group that is glad we were able to get rid of him. I'm not sure if he was playing top 4 minutes or not but that is pretty sad if true. I suspect his is a serious buyout candidate this summer. As for Yzerman, he is about to let the teams best player in team history walk for nothing in his prime. Combine that with the Drouin and St Louis fiasco and i hope he stays in Tampa far away from my team

Fair enough, doesn't mean I'm not going to stop calling you out when I think you are grasping at straws.

I think he handled the Drouin "fiasco" brilliantly, I would want my GM to not be bullied by a teenage player and his agent as well as showing patience in not throwing away a very talented player.

He also didn't let an aging although very special player pressure him into making a biased decision on the olympic roster, tough no doubt but admirable in my books.

Stamkos is tough as well but I imagine a 8 year 10+ million dollar contract would hurt his team too.....

I really hope JB resigns Etem. He definitely can be a solid 3rd line winger in the nhl.

How would you react if Benning lets Bo go for free in 5 years? It's brutal. Drouin situation...We can only speculate as nobody knows what was going on behind closed doors

Probably unlikely as hey have a few worse contracts but it could happen. If they somehow manage to sign Stamkos they will be In trouble

Buying out Garrison creates a huge hole on their D. Would they like him to make 750k-1 million less? sure, but you don't buy the guy out because he's only there for 2 more seasons on that deal and he's not easily replaceable.

It will depend on whether I feel that Bo is more important to the team than the 2-3 other players who also need to be signed for that cap space.

Don't get me wrong, I think TBL should be working hard at getting Stamkos to return but there are a lot of other players on that team who have been contributing on sweet heart deals and need to be sorted out. Yzerman has some tough choices to make but that's because he has many excellent players not because he has screwed up.

If they could move Bishop and Johnson while their value is really high and keep Stamkos I think they would be sitting pretty, although Hedman is going to cash in soon as well.

Garrison is a top 4 lhd on most teams. He was behind edler and hamhuis here though. And he'd be behind Hutton and Sbisa end edler now. We needed to move a NTC and did. Quite beingbeing a little yapping female mutt every week unless you're prepared to be mounted on the wall trophy style like one.

But other then that, solid post striker
