Just read through all of the posts on this blog and right now I'm convinced the Blackhawks will trade CC. In the cap world, it makes the most sense to get the best team on the ice. - matt_ahrens
Ive excissivley enjoyed the 3 Cup runs.
So Mote It Be.
Well see what happens. |

There are so many problems here that many Hawks fans need to realize. Not saying that a lot already don't see the problems that lay ahead.
#1 Seabrook's contract. Yes, he's only a 1 mil a year raise from this past year. Not bad. But for the next 8 years?? He showed that the miles are piling up and while my "Hawk heart" loves him, can we honestly call him a 6.875 mil a year player in 2020?
#2 Hossa's contract. He's at 5.275 mil until 20-21. He showed last year that he's going to be a great second and third line guy. Solid defensively and a great two way game with some offensive spark. But does any team want a bottom 6 guy at 5.275 mil? Easy with the pitchforks Hawks Nation. We need to wake up as a fan base and accept that he's getting older and regressing in ability. Does he still bring value and experience? No question. But for that kind of money....
#3 Prospects and draft picks. The Hawks have been aggressive in going for it year after year. One can argue that Bowman sees the window is open and wants to squeeze as many cups as he can during that time. Others would say that he's mortgaging the future in order to keep that window open. I.E. we need a defenseman and Stephen Johns at 800k was a nice piece that we had to give away just to get rid of Sharp and his contract.
We, as fans, have been subjugated to such mediocrity from 2000-2008 that we almost love to see this aggressiveness. But I, for one, want to have some levity from the Hawks when making these deals. Some deals make sense while others, I feel, are senseless.
Hossa has a no movement clause. So shipping him off and his contract isn't as easy as one thinks. Retirement isn't an option because of his cap recapture penalty. If Hossa retires after next season, that's 4.275 mil against the cap until 20-21 for a guy not even on the ice.
Trading Crawford away is an option but what's the return going to be?
Trading Shaw away is another option but again, what's the return?
No one is about to do the Hawks any favors. They know that they are in cap hell right now and after seeing them rattle off three cups, no one is going to be anxious to help them get back to the top of the mountain.
So can we blame Bowman and praise him both in the same breath? You're darn right we can. Signing Hossa, as bad as the contract may be now, was the right move that helped bring three cups here. Ends and means. Watching the Hawks lose guys like Brouwer, Niemi, Versteeg, Ladd, Frolik, Eager, etc. and seeing them replaced with young talent or guys who were just scouted well like Panarin deserves high praise. But facts are facts. Winning equals championships and championships equals more money.
Did Bowman overpay for Toews and Kane? "Probably" not. Did he overpay for Kruger? "Probably" so. The Hawks still have the talent to squeak out another cup or two with the current core but it will take some of that Bowman magic to find the right depth players to fill out the bottom three on D and the bottom six at F. But fans need to wake up and realize the hard numbers.
The Hawks have 23.68 mil a year committed to Keith, Seabs, Crow, and Hossa. All of who are on the wrong side of 30. Hammer is 29. Throw his salary in and that's 27.7 mil. That's 37% of a salary cap set at 74 mil, assuming it gets there. So yes, things are not as pretty as they once were and we may have to stomach another nice player like TT or even a core player being traded before Stan has the cap flexibility to work his magic.
Bottom line, the fan in me says that the Hawks put together three cup winners and minus one bad bounce in game 7, in overtime, the Hawks likely would have had four cups in seven years. Not to shabby. But we can't carte blanche give Hawks brass a free pass either. Had Stan pulled the trigger on the Sharp trade at the draft last year, we may have kept Oduya. Speculation yes, but very likely. What would he have meant to them this year? A deep run or even a cup run? Maybe.
I love this team and I support them fully. But we all need to take a deep breath and realize that things aren't pretty right now and trading Crow, as bad as that may be, might be the only option we have left for building a serious contender. Interesting times ahead for sure. - Shamz24
Like your comments....Let's hope things work out for the Hawks . I would add one thing to your honest and intelligent notes. Coach Q needs to start giving rookies/ new players more ice time and give them some slack when they make a mistake.

Elite for sure. Top 5 of the day. Much needed reality. The big three have a lot of miles. They will start the slow decline in a year or two. All those pucks Hammer absorbs will catch up eventually. |

I doubt Q is ever going to change with regards to developing young players. If they produce, they play. If they don't, they sit (or get sent to Rockford or traded.) Q is here as long as the Blackhawks are cup contenders. When the major rebuild starts, they'll get a new coach. |

Long-time reader, first-time poster. I agree, as long as Q is the coach, young players will have shorter leashes than what many fans would like. Another thing about Q that someone else commented on another JJ blog is that he impacts the type of players who the team should pursue.
For example, many on here desire to have Tom Wilson and Matt Martin on the Hawks. I would love them, too. But just as he did with Weise as well as with (crazy as it sounds) Carcillo and Mashinter, Q either doesn't play them or miscasts them in roles that don't suit their skill set and style. The likes of Weise, Carcillo, and Mashinter didn't make it to the NHL being two-way forwards or defensive specialists. They are (were) bangers and hit, fought, agitated, whatever it takes. So when Bowman trades a top prospect with potential like a Danault to get a Weise (putting Fleishmann to the side for sake of argument), that trade is somewhat wasted because we expect Weise to play like he has in his career but instead needs to conform to Q's strict system or sit in the press box.
I'm afraid if Bowman does trade to get a player like Martin or Kyle Clifford or whichever bottom-6 banger we as fans desire, we wouldn't get the Islanders-version of Martin or the Kings-version of Clifford. Instead we'd get Q's version, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if you want all 12 forwards to be 3-zone players. But as a hockey fan, I also like seeing crushing hits and agitating play that can take the opposing team off their game or return the favor if our stars are being roughed up or turn momentum around back to the Hawks favor if they're not doing so hot on the ice. Q's system suppresses such play hence why the Hawks get knocked around regardless of our elite offensive talent and Corsi-type stats. |

Out of the group of teams that JJ mentioned that were in the mix for CC, the only move I see happening is the one where CC goes to Toronto.
In return, Toronto should give us their #30 (1st) and #31 (2nd) picks. You have to believe that if NYI were offering their #19 Stan could wiggle a 2nd from Toronto. Otherwise CC goes to NYI for the higher 1st.
The other team Buffalo, their only 1st is at #8, would Buffalo actually give us the #8 pick in the draft? Yes NJ gave up a #10 for Schneider, so you never know.
Again, all of this is assuming that the rumor is CC for a #1 or is that what Stan wants in return versus what is being offered?

Connor Bleackley was not given a qualifying offer. 6' 192" played center and LW for Red Deer. Went from AVS to coyotes in the Boedker deal. Wonder if stan explores it |

Can see Shaw going to Calgary if the numbers don't work. Maybe Ferland and a pick. |

Paid his dues? A grand total of 43 NHL games in two seasons and he is ready to replace Crawford?
Sample size not big enough. - Return of the Roar
I meant in the minors, and just his overall improbable journey back to respectability. Like I said it is a huge gamble ,but desperate times call for desperate measures .He is here for a reason ,and seems like a goalie who plays better the more he plays . Moving any of the core is a pain .Let test out that theory some have that we can win with just about any goalie back there |

Actually, all of this assumes that Crawford's modified NTC lets Bowman move him make the (a) productive move. |

Sorry, I know you know a lot about hockey but find me a Crow lite? You know for a fact Darling couldn't be Crow lite? Did you know that Matt Murray was that good before he made that playoff run this year?
He was a guy they specifically drafted one of the top Quebec junior league golaies in his class, who was brought along slowly (he learned preparation along with on-ice improvements). Maybe you didn't hear of him but most here did, he was the guy asked to stay in the farm until ready, a luxury teams no longer have.
and NO I knew Matt Murray was cool under fire and one playoff doesn't fill a resume, as I said, teams will spent coutless hours finding the weak spots and exposing them. If you want to hold someone body parts in Pittsburgh, you can hold the entire team that was fierce in the back check and the back side pressure without
ever stopping their excellence...
I am sure these prejudices mean something to someone.
They at this juncture have 5 starters with the Czech. Please, don't take a tone with me, sonny, I resent it.
Somehow I have taken on villain's role, because I have an opinion that I can back up.
I don't think they can win one without him next year. - wiz1901
Wiz, man... you gotta edit a little at least... What in the hell does that sentence bolded above mean? I'm getting something sexual out of the first part about "holding someone's body parts in Pittsburgh." I'm sure that's NOT what you mean. Please edit. |
