Chicago also did not have the space for a buyout, or at least as much as the Flyers do. A lot of people are also saying Chicago got raped in the deal.

Again, the buyout is the best realistic option. You can stand your ground and have your take, but I honestly think you're lying to yourself if you disagree.

- jmatchett383

But I have never said the buyout isn't a good option. I just think there are other options too.

I know a lot think Chicago got raped but that all depends on if TT turns into anything. If he tops out as a 3rd line winger I think Chicago knew what they were doing. He had an ok year this year. We will see what happens in Carolina.

Where are you on Fleury? He's been pretty good the last two seasons, at least
- AllInForFlyers

I think he is good but I think there are better/cheaper/younger options depending on what your team looks like at the time

Of the ones we know should be on the market

1. Beeshoppe
2. Anderson

I'd go after Fleury, only because of his manageable cap hit and the fact that Pittsburgh is in a tough spot with him.

Yup, just speculating why there has been no,clarity on the situation yet. I wouldn't be shocked to see him wave his NMC and go to the phantoms. He still is playing professional hockey at full salary. Flyers would get some cap relief and no penalty going forward.

Athletes want to play. Max talbot signed in the Khl to continue his career. Playing in Allentown might not be so bad as opposed to moving over seas.

A likely scenario is that Umberger has been approached and asked if he would accept waivers for a buy out. Due to his NMC, he has 24 hours to make that decision, before he can be bought out. The buyout period opened yesterday.

Yes, there are other options. But the best option is a buyout.

What are the odds of a 2nd or 3rd round pick turning into a good 3rd line winger in the NHL?

He already is something... a productive middle-six forward (with upside).

The interesting thing is, what is the basis for that opinion on Laughton. For the record, you could be right, he might be a bust. I don't think there is a single expert who could tell you definitively how Laughton is going to turn out. I also don't know how you can know that there are guys that have higher ceilings and soon may be replacing Laughton. How do you know that? Based on what exactly? Laughton was a first round draft pick who is just 21 years old. The impatience of some hockey fans really astounds me. Regardless of how it turns out, just as a matter of sound hockey principals, it would be flat out stupid to give up on Laughton at this point.
- MJL

I'll keep it simple.

I don't see a high ceiling for him. His skill set doesn't lead me to believe he will be more than a 3rd line player. He has already been moved from center which was what everyone projected him to be. A good two way defensive center. Usually when you struggle you can rely on your best attribute to help.

Couturier struggled to score but defensively he was always solid.

Be happy.

I fold.

I'll take a knee.

I have nothing against him I just like the other two better...and they both come from situations with teams in a tough spot

Sure I have zero issue with an athlete wanting to play professionally as long as possible or try to maximize their wealth by continuing to play. For example, Vinny isn't signing his retirement papers until that bonus is deposited. No issue from me.

I don't know. But Gostisbehere was a 3rd rounder. Hagg is a second rounder. So am I just supposed to say they are worthless picks(2nd and 3rd rounders)

I actually think Laughton and TT are pretty equal in terms of development...Laughton was never given the opportunities that TT has had

Couturier is a very rare young player, who had a excellent defensive game, even as a 19 year old player. I don't think a worse example could be used to look at Laughton's development in comparison. Laughton has had some issues, such as the concussion, which set him back. I see a player who has a high motor, can play with pace, play physical, is a good skater with a strong shot. He may wind up a 3rd line player. You need 3 scoring lines that can score in today's NHL to be a top team.

I think he's asking if you think it's likely that a 2nd/3rd rounder turns into a top-9 forward or top-4 defenseman.

Yes, there are exceptions, but not likely.

Both those picks aren't good choices as an example imo. Both players had concerns with their respective games which caused scouts to not draft them sooner. Also, I don't think anyone would have projected Ghost's success/impact. Which goes with what MJL said, how do you know x player's ceiling/potential/capabilities on a certain level when they are that young.

Nope, but the odds are low that either of those picks become what Teravainen already is. The players could also be better. Hockey wise, it's a bad trade for Chicago, but there are cap elements to it, and these are some of the deals that very good teams are forced to make at times.
