Why would they trade a goalie in a terrible goalie market?
- YuenglingJagr

I wouldn't say it's a terrible goalie market. Couple of teams need a goalie and then there's a couple of teams who are in a position to trade their current goalie or are not satisfied with their goalie situation whether that's performance or cap reasoning. And we aren't going to resign both Neuvy and Mason. By end of this upcoming season , I'd assume one of Stoalie and Lyon (hopefully) are ready to translate their game to the NHL level.

I am sorry.

So they would expose Stolarz then.

- J35Bacher

Yes. Unless they expose another goalie, say Lyons, or maybe an ECHL player if he's signed by the Flyers and on loan.

Same. I know you can protect 2 goalies for 2 fewer skaters, but I haven't seen the no goalie one.
- jmatchett383

I mean...its not set in stone yet...but I have only ever seen 2 options rumored

Do they have actual NHL contracts?
- YuenglingJagr

Just thought of that. Not sure.

Edit: They don't, but Stolarz is also an RFA. Right now, Alex Lyon is the only goalie with a contract running past next season.

I don't know if it's been talked about. Is it possible the flyers are thinks about asking umberger to waive his nmc in order to play him in LHV this year? A little cap savings and he could be a good mentor and a good player at that level for the phantoms.

Why would he terminate? If he's bought out, he gets the buyout money plus free agency. If he terminates, he doesn't collect a dime.
- bmeltzer

Exactly.

The kind of situation where a termination makes sense is so rare that it's hardly worth discussing as a viable option.

Bill,

Any chance they are holding him for a short time to assess whether anyone would be interested in using him as a cap floor tool?

I know that Umberger's best chance of being on an NHL roster for the 16/17 season is under his current contract with the Flyers. If he chooses to terminate, or is bought out, I'd say his chances of being in the NHL next season are less than 50/50
- MJL

Much less, imho

I highly doubt it...teams could be forced to give up assets in order to unload salary...which means the Flyers would have to give up assets to get rid of Umberger...no thanks...buyout

Agreed. If he terminates, he gets paid $0 from the Flyers and has to find work elsewhere.

If he gets bought out, he gets paid $3M from the Flyers and has to find work elsewhere.

If the Flyers keep him, he makes $4.5M this year as a 13th/14th forward, and then has to find work elsewhere next year.

Why would he agree to turn down his last big payday?

Ah, of course. Because doing nothing and making money is worse than doing nothing and not making money.

Almost certainly would have to move up to at least #10 to have a shot at him, but he is the poster child for what Hextall wants in his centers. Big, fast, skilled, smart and effective in all 3 zones. I'd love to get this guy.

No...I think you are thinking about two different things as if they are the same.

A NMC does not protect a player from being bought out. The first step in a buyout is putting a player on unconditional waivers, which essentially is saying they are going to buy him out, but any team can take him if they want.

- YuenglingJagr

So why would another team claim him when they can just let him get bought out and then strike a cheap deal with him?

No chance that he agrees to terminate.
- MJL

Yup, as Bill said, why would he? Makes no sense. Buy him out or pay him full price for one more year, those are the only options.

See I didn't think what the Blackhawks did was bad.

Obviously they didn't think Tevo was a good fit for them. He had value so they attached it to bickell to move the whole contract. They got 2nd and 3rd round picks.

Laughton doesn't wow me and I am not exactly sure what his ceiling is. I am not against using him as the same bait to move someone like RJ or MacDonald.

I believe that is what the Flyers plan on doing. Choose which one you want to keep, make an agreement in principle, and then sign the extension after the draft.

Of course, if they do resign one, I think the expansion team will have much better goalie options than Stolarz.

- jmatchett383

Could they take him to stock their AHL team?

I think, someone looking for a veteran spare forward/depth player might offer him the minimum, but that's the best he's gonna get.
