Depending on their off season plans, this may not be a bad idea. If they aren't looking to add any significant salary via FA (and I don't think Hexy plans on doing that), it may be better to take a larger penalty in 16-17 and have RJ completely off the books for 17-18.

Unless they want to make a serious run at Backes/Okposo/Nielsen, I don't see them making any big moves. If anything, I could see them shedding salary (Read/Streit).

Would have to be applied directly to this year's cap.

Edit: A buyout would result in $1.6M on this year's cap. So you're basically doubling the cap hit this year (still saving $1M+ versus him staying) to have no cap hit next year.

If you're thinking you'll get several rooks in the lineup this season then I'd say if it's legal.. do it.

I'm saving my pennies so I won't be saying "they'll save me money if they don't make it." Because just making it turned out to be a lot of fun.

If they stick with the same roster, adding a healthy Coots, possibly Provorov, a full season of Ghost, I think they shouldn't be any worse. The only real $$ they have to add at this point that is unknown is B. Schenn and Gudas. They may have to make some trades with low returns (Streit, Read, Schultz) to fit them but that's the case no matter what you do with Umberger.

I'd hope that some of Cosuins, Leier, Morin, Hagg, and Martel are given a legit shot to make opening night (although none of them should be assumed).

Basically, I'm just trying to spend a little more this year (where I see them as a playoff team but not a contender) so they have more next year (when they could start being in the mix of contenders).

Why are we trading a first and a second for Harrington?

They really need to change the mix up front. There's something very wrong with the chemistry in the top 6. They need to address that in the off season.

I have confidence that there's enough in place to fix the D and I'm happy with the goalie situation top to bottom pretty much.

I think they will be a 90-100 point bubble team. A lot, as always, depends on which teams, including ours, can stay healthy and how much their younger players can continue to develop and contribute.

No no they are trading 1st round and second round pick PLUS Streit and Read for Harrington.

If that's the case, what do you want them to do this off season? Are you looking for them to push forward and make some positive changes or is this another, shed bad contracts, patch some spots and grow from within season?

Why not just trade them Read, Streit, and B. Schenn for Harrington?

I don't want to "pay" to shed Matt Read. I'd rather sit on his contract.

Streit should get you some return even if it's minor.

Because somehow they are also getting a 1st and 3rd round pick for letting Schenn go.

I don't have much faith in Read, and almost zero in Streit. I would ship them out for whatever the best return is by July 1st. They both just looked flat-out bad all of last year. B. Schenn's raise could probably replace what you gain cap-wise by moving Read, and Gudas' raise would be offset by whatever you do with Umberger. I think a healthy Couturier could go a long way in helping the top-6.

Well he's giving Read, Streit, a 1st and 2nd to Toronto for Harrington, then we're letting Toronto OS Schenn for a 1st and 3rd...wouldn't it be easier to just include Schenn in the original deal and keep our 2nd instead of getting a 3rd?

Might be off base on this, but I feel like they'll buy him out now just to avoid his NMC impacting a potential expansion draft.

Shedding bad contracts would be nice though the one they need to shed the most, AMac, is almost impossible to move at this point due to the 4 remaining years. Other than that, I'd rather they keep developing mainly from within over the next 2 seasons and then use FA and/or trades to fill the holes needed to contend for the Cup.

It wouldn't surprise me if they squeaked into the playoffs next year, nor would it surprise me if they took a small step backwards and missed out. There will be ups and downs along the way, but overall I agree with Hextall's philosophy of player development and building from within.

Just wait, one day he'll be mentioned along with promising young defensemen like Tim Erixon, Tim Ramholt, and Kevin Marshall...you know, guys who weren't quite on the level of Luca Sbisa, Ryan Parent, and Oskars Bartulis.
