Sad day in Flyer Town!! Had the honor to play against Rick in an alumni game. Classy guy and a hell of a player. My heart and prayers go out to his family and all the Flyers family.

im in the same boat, was born in '85 and instantly became a fan since before i can remember. my dad had season tickets his whole adolescent life, before the whole starting a family thing. i love going back and watching highlights of clarke, parent, the rifle, etc., etc. i know i never got to see these guys play, but its awesome to know that these guys (and of course Mr. Snider), paved the way and set the foundation for what hockey in philly is today.
With respect to RJ Umberger, is mutual termination an option?
If the Flyers buy him out this summer, Umberger gets $1.5M for the next 2 years for a total of $3M. However, what if the Flyers offerred him $3.25M for a mutual termination this year? He'd make an extra $250K, he'd get it in a lump sum (you could tweak the number when taxes are factored in), and the Flyers don't have to carry the extra $1.5M cap hit for next year.

If the Flyers buy him out this summer, Umberger gets $1.5M for the next 2 years for a total of $3M. However, what if the Flyers offerred him $3.25M for a mutual termination this year? Would have to be applied directly to this year's cap.
Edit: A buyout would result in $1.6M on this year's cap. So you're basically doubling the cap hit this year (still saving $1M+ versus him staying) to have no cap hit next year.

Depending on their off season plans, this may not be a bad idea. If they aren't looking to add any significant salary via FA (and I don't think Hexy plans on doing that), it may be better to take a larger penalty in 16-17 and have RJ completely off the books for 17-18.

Table here shows it's amazing what they were able to save against cap and in real dollars, though. Considering his level of play, he did them a favor screwing up.
