And that will insure you never have the skilled guys you need to score the goals and win games....
- JohnScammo

Really, and why is that? You are focusing on the bun of this burger and not the meat. There's so much dead weight in between, that the extra 500k on MM, will be lost when the isles arent paying the likes of Bailey, Grabovski, Bernier, Zidlicky. Never mind the fact that 10 million will be available when OKposo signs elsehwere, and they get rid of Halak. So lets not start arguing that signing MM will prevent a Stamkos signing. Thats just plain silly...

Its funny you and Chief reference both the Pens and the Blackhawks and compare them to the isles. Both those teams have the best 1-2 punch in the league. Their teams are cup contending teams.....the isles are not.
- kindlyrick

Listen I know the only reason you come on here is to argue with people but I believe this was from you "All teams who compete for the cup have team toughness" We just stated teams that have won the cup or are currently playing for it that don't have it. Nobody is comparing them to the Islanders except you.

Oh come on. You can't say that "no team that competes for the Cup doesn't play a big, physical game" and then start cherry picking which teams are allowed to play softer because they have star players.

How about the Sharks? They're playing for the Cup right now and they finished 23rd in the league in total hits. Or the Lightning, who played for it last year and made it to game 7 of the ECF this year? They finished 24th this year in total hits.

The truth is that there is really zero correlation between how much you hit and how good your team is. I like Martin, I really do. But he's a marginally talented 4th liner that is going to want way more than he's worth. He's entirely replaceable. I'd rather have the cap space to swing for the fences with Stamkos.

- eichiefs9

What does this stat even mean???? 23rd in the league in hits? Are you trying to insinuate that because the Sharks are 23rd in total hits in the league that they arent a tough team? Toughness doesn't just come from hits......its willingness to block shots, get in the dirty areas. MM is not just some bum who can drop the gloves. The guy absolutely has a role on this team....and I think letting him walk for 500k is a huge mistake, and its certainly not going to prevent them from signing UFAs.

Still on the $500K number. I think he's only worth $2 million tops, so it's actually a $1 MM difference of opinion we have.

Yes, the Isles will save money on some other guys, but that money should be used toward a scoring winger for JT, not on a 4th line forward whose hits rarely separate the man from the puck....

$1M/yr could very well be the difference between signing a top free agent vs. not signing them. Despite how much you and niteislander believe that $500k is "not a significant amount of money", it actually is quite significant.

If $1M/yr is the difference between Stamkos playing here or not, then you can easily find that at least 50% of that amount by not paying Martin what he's asking for.

I think isles should trade for Reeves & Glass and have the toughest 4th line next year.....

EVERY TEAM competing for the cup has toughness. I love how you wrote "we". Instead of replying shouldnt you be flagging my posts? How ironic that the guy who likes #12 is flagging people on here.

im assuming this is all based on what the salary cap is right now right? Cause that can't change down the road....

If you havent noticed, the isles like to go with their own. Those draft picks are not paid heavily until their entry level deals are over. They have prob 6 guys coming up that will be prob playing real minutes and wont be paid much. Thats the Snow way...

I would assume so, since no word yet of cap increase has been stated.

It's pretty self explanatory. Out of 30 NHL teams the Sharks total amount of hits was 23rd most. 7 teams had fewer total hits. 22 had more total hits.

So if toughness doesn't come from hits, why the hell do we need to overpay for a guy that has the most hits in the league? Why can't we find another guy who can block shots and get in the dirty areas? Other than leading the league in hits, tell me something unique about Matt Martin. And don't give me this "he's a great locker room guy" garbage, like he's the only player in the league that stands up for and gets along with his teammates. I want something unique that Martin does that separates him from the whole host of other available bottom line players.

You have some weird possessive thing going on with Chief......i like going back and forth with him because while I dont agree with everything, i enjoy his reasoning. You on the other hand loose sight of what this is all about.....saying things to me like "just get the phuck outta here", like you own this site. Just because you've been posting on here for years, does not make it yours.

I've been posting on here since 2007, and i've never said anything that should warrant being flagged. Its a cowardly response......if you dont like what I say then address it or leave it, but flagging anyones post is bush league.

It has nothing to with the salary cap. Maybe TOR is going to offer Stamkos $10M/yr but he'd come here if we offered him $11M. Maybe we look to sign one or two of the other coveted free agents? The money is better used elsewhere.

Have you ever met anyone in the league who plays that role? Most of those guys have screws loose. But to you, this guys has similar TOI vs his corsi, and his hits total is 17 lesss than MM on a saturday with the home jersey on, so yeah he can replace MM. Whats unique about MM? Well lets see, his a cog on the wheel of arguable the isles best line. I havent looked this up, but im sure you will......which line on the isles has the most offensive zone presence with their TOI? Id be willing to guess its the MM/CC/CC line. Matt Martin has chemistry with that line......its just that simple.

Are you even listening to yourself? See the forrest through the trees man. 500k will not make or break any team in this league. Teams move players all the time to free up money.
