Director of CSS said they look at analytics last.

His 13 points are a direct correlation to his O-zone positioning, which is something that can be coached. Since he's been groomed as a shut down D-man, he's always tentative in the O-zone. He needs to get into better spots.

What you can't coach is his cannon, which he needs to learn to use.

- golfingsince

He's never been an offensive type player, he had a good 19 year old season but nothing earth-shattering for sure.

If he was a 30 plus point dman I'd be stroking myself like Joe Thornton right now over this deal.

and in the words of brian burke what you also can't coach is truculence. Even the name McCann sounds really soft. On other hand, look at 'Gudbranson'.

much strong
such toughness

- DeflatedPucks

I think McCann might not crack the Panthers roster this season, but will stick with it the year after for sure.

I used to live in the SEA area and the last fans I would think about would be bandwagon vancouverites. Seahawks have more dedicated fans I've met at games in Oregon and Idaho than vancity.
- DeflatedPucks

Try living in Vancouver & see what the Seahawk fans r like.
As for Canuck fans we have always had the biggest fickle base around.
The true fans toughed it out & make points good & bad.
The fickle ones r never satisfied aka bandwagoners.

This trade basically means we are drafting Dubois and Canucks didn't think McCann could play the wing.

I know the list of players, you don't need to send me the link - I'm asking YOU to tell me who YOU think is right/better player to target

Good. Just waiting for this season to be over and then for the draft.

Haven't been out much because my team has beconme so bad that I'm forced to troll my own team's thread.

- bloatedmosquito

Oh I (frank)ing know that feeling.

At least we have a little fun left until the whole thing shuts down for 2 months

Great trade.

Give to get we replace McCann with Dubois or Tkachuk and our top looks a trillion times better then it did before. you cant steal good players from teams and who cares if we added an extra pick we needed a big nhl dman and we got one. Awesome move.

- The_Kuze

You cleverly avoid the trap of too many prospects.

My first reaction to the the trade was WTF??

Having some time to digest it I think it was a good move. I think Benning overpaid with the 2nd round pick (as he has done in the past) but I think he filled a massive hole in the roster. The D has been a tire fire for a couple of years now and he was able to acquire a 24 year old 6'4'' right handed top 4 defenceman.

"Young" forwards the Canucks currently have in the system: Horvat, Sven, Virtanen, Boeser and this years 1st.

Centers the Canucks have in the system: Sedin, Sutter, Horvat, Granlund (potentially the 1st)

And for everyone whining about losing McCann, he has been in probably half of all trade proposals on this board for the past 2 months

I'm guessing that Benning didn't have anyone at 33 that he felt would be as good as Gudbrandson.

This team needs guys like Gudbrandson and Tryminkin to match up against the bigger teams in the west. How many times were there complaints about how soft the back end was and how they got pushed around

I think a lot of people are also looking at this trade as a singular entity. We have no idea how the roster is going to look in October. Bennning could have another deal or 2 on the go and we still have free agency to go through.

Losing McCann and a 2nd sucks but its tough to not say the defence looks better then it did yesterday which was a glaring weakness last year.

As far as offence goes, Boeser is coming along and we will have the this years first. I pretty confident that Benning will sign another top 6 forward UFA.

McCann with a few years more development is gonna be a good NHL top six center, something the future Canucks don't have.

Acquiring Gudbranson doesn't change the fact the Canucks have TWO top six guys in their lineup as we speak....two

He didnt do a good job in his opportunities this past year on the wing, much better in the middle, which is why I find it odd that FLA and others are commenting how he will play wing there. Its a puzzling move IMO for Florida to take McCann unless they have another deal in the works or their new analytics dept just loves McCann (like Dubois from TOR does)...

Name ONE move the Leafs made last season or off-season that was not entirely justifiable.

Then, when you fail at that, consider that they finished with more points this past season than the one before.

Then, when you still don't get it, remember that they went out got the best available coach they could.

Then, finally, come back and talk to me about deliberate tank jobs.

Oh, and before you get clever and bring up trading Kessel or Phaneuf, remember point 2 above, AND remember how those two were regularly criticized for both their play and their contracts before we traded them.

- Aetherial

Name one hockey trade? Simply amassing picks is a tank job.
True they said there would be pain but it amounts to the same.
0 intent to make the playoffs....say no more

The blowing up is done so lets see some results of the rebuild soon.

If there was one thing I saw between San Jose's 10 natural centers and St. Louis's 8, its that its never worth it to try a winger at center.

So... nothing?

Not one example of a tank move.

- Aetherial

Everyone can clearly see you tanked just like the Sabres did the previous season. Stop wasting your time trying to convince people otherwise. It just makes it worse.

Interestingly enough, with JB's moves the Canucks now have:

11th overall from 2007 (Sutter)
19th overall from 2008 (Sbisa)
3rd overall from 2010 (Gudbranson)
29th overall from 2010 (Etem)
13th overall from 2011 (Sven)
45th overall from 2011 (Granlund)

Given how poorly the team has drafted from 2007-2011, I am really happy with his moves. Yes those arent all superstars, but they are NHL players and if they were home grown, I think we would be very happy with these guys as the result. JB has got the team younger and done well with his own drafts so far

As of right now 2. Top 6 potential: Horvat, Virtanen, Sven, Boeser Tkchuk/Dubios. UFA?

Next year is going to rough regardless. I'm looking a couple of years down the road.

So because you think your "regional NFL team" won a superbowl, the Vancouver area has a championship team?

- DeflatedPucks

So because the Pens tank like champs & get Lemieux then Crosby u sayin they built a championship the hard way? FYI when or if we ever get a 1OA get back to us.

That list is comprised of piss-poor castoff players...it's nothing to be happy about considering what he gave up to acquire a bunch of middling player.

Between Goligoski and Demers Dallas resigns one. I would rather have paid for Gudbranson(who can stillimproveA) than pay Demers 5+mil for what he is.

Here's the thing though, the Canucks aren't deep at center, quality top six centers. At the NHL or prospect level they have ONE top six NHL center. They're a rebuilding team so they trade away their one and only talented potential top six center...WTF.

The team is rebuilding and they now have two picks in the first four rounds.

Bennng is trading away the future to try and compete now and the Canucks have TWO top six players on their team, and they're 36 years old...again...WTF is wrong with him?

If Bennng doesn't SIGNIFICANTLY improve the top six then the next two years is wasted trying to compete in the West with zero hope of winning a Cup.

- LeftCoaster

If it was all about winning now, they would be trading for vets often which are always available and at a bargain. They are trading for young players who's entire prime is ahead of them.

You are starting to spin things off like the whiners.

He is repairing a major gap in the teams development. Many on here don't like that he is using draft picks to do it but the fact is that it is needed.
